My daughter has been having this dark brown discharge for a couple weeks. Its like the discharge you get at the end of your period.
She only gets a period every three months as she is on oral contraception but I still think its related to period issues.
She has been on abx continiously since Nov and she used to occassionally get bleeding and spotting which primary said abx can do that.
This brown discharge is getting quite annoying.
Any ideas what this could be?

Some antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of the pill. And, even w/o abx, the pill is not 100% effective all the time.
Of course, many women use the pill to decrease painful periods, not necessaryily for birth control.
[NOT at all prompting any kind of further details from you - so as for her to keep her privacy in this matter.]
But, if for birth control, it's important to know that spotting like that (whether dark or lighter color) ongoing could indicate pregnancy.
Even if not, a period every three months can be cause for concern as the uterus does not have a chance to go through its usual discharge process.
However, I realize she may be on the pill solely to keep from having periods very often as some do now. If so, still, it may be too hard on the uterus keeping and it could be trying to shed, so to speak.
But, I would have given anything - anything - to have reduced my periods by 2/3 when they were so painful as to ruin my life, my studies and my career.
Without all the details, it's hard to say (and I'm not a medical person but did have much trouble in this area in my younger days. Finally, an herbalist set it all right for me after decades of torment).
Of course, lyme can affect this, too.
That the discharge is dark, it could be the uterus' way to try to clean house but it's what's called "stagnant blood" in Chinese Medicine. The health of the liver also plays a part here.
She needs to see a gyn. about this. I hope she has a LLMD who can refer her to a LL gyn or at least a lyme-friendly gyn. There could be other possibilities, too.
A LL Naturopathic doctor / LL Acupuncturist may also be able to help but(if sexually active) a pregnancy test is a wise first move (if not already done).

This is likely the cause of your daughter's discharge:
"Brown vaginal discharge is most often associated with old endometrial tissues. In other words, if your period is late you might get a brown, rather than red, discharge. It could also mean that for whatever reason during your last menses the entire uterine lining failed to make a timely exit. What you are seeing now is the fashionably late exit."
It could be other, more serious issues, but the most common reason is the above.

Thank you Keebler (ever so wise one) and tickle. Yes she was put on birth control because her periods were so painful and erractic.
Pregnancy is not a concern as she is still a virgin. I will certainly talk with her LLMD next month and see what he thinks and also her primary care doc and perhaps they will want her to see an GYN or maybe halt the abx for a while.
Hate this nasty illness and all that comes with it especially for our children.

I sometimes have the same issues as your daughter. I am not on birth control, no chance of being pregnant, and I get very irregular and light periods (24 hours) with random spotting. Mine is also dark like dried blood. This happens whether I'm on or off antibiotics. I have not brought it up with any of the doctors I've seen.
I agree with tickle's quote although I'm not medically trained. I have not been to concerned with this issue for myself. I think for me it's mainly due to being so ill. I have lost a lot of weight, am not eating normally and am overall very weak. I don't think my body has the strength to add in periods right now.

No, I'm not in the capital region but I'm about an hour from Saratoga. I was glad I was able to go to the meeting, but apparently sitting still all day is not a good idea for me since I got really sick right after.

This is happening to me, too, but I am 45, not on the pill, had tubal ligation after last baby @ 40.
Just went to OBGYN yesterday. Got a pap, and am scheduled for an ultrasound 'just to see' if there may be a cyst or something. Said my cervix looks good.
Said it is not endometriosis, that comes with debilitating cramps, etc.
I do wonder hard if it is Lyme related/ Lyme treatment.
I was on Bouloke for some months, now on Tindamax.
Watch out for iron levels- I am supplementing B-12, iron, vitamin C, folic.

Thanks surprise...yes we are doing lots of supplements. She got her period a few days later so it must have been related to that.
Usually the brown discharge is at the end but this was at the beginning...weird

- It makes sense, actually. And with the body, nothing surprises me or seems weird anymore. Stagnant blood gets stuck a while and then releases and moves on out of the way.
Hope all gets better and she finds ways to harmonize all this. -
