Let's start a list here so people will have an idea as to what type of herbs/foods may need to be avoided while on meds.
There are so many herbs and foods that influence the p450 liver enzyme... so I'm looking for ones that greatly influence it.

**p450 Enzyme**
Inhibit = meds stay in system longer
Induce = meds leave system quicker

HERBS
St Johns Wort (greatly induces)
Echinacea (inhibits)
Dandelion (inhibits - decreases effectiveness of Cipro)
Eucalyptus Oil (inhibits)
Tobacco (induces)

FOODS
Grapefruits (greatly inhibits)
Watercress (inhibits)

MEDS
Rifampin (induces)
Mycobutin (induces)

canefan,

The links here may be just what you seek.

Some things, not great alone, can be fine in certain combination, though. This all gets very tricky so best to have a good LL doctor on board.

Cytochrome P-450 links and lists here, too, discussing interactions. Some links are very sophisticated in their detail.

Also what HELPS that liver pathway work better:

Okay...quick question and then I can add what herbs/foods I have listed.

My son just had the detoxigenomics profile done and I do have a copy of the physicians report which lists these meds/foods/herbs.

What I don't understand though is would this list only be applicable to certain genes relative to this enzyme?

There were two genes he had come back with polymorphisms in the coding. CYP1B1 and CYP2D6. The rest were normal.

So would the foods/herbs on his list substrates/inhibitors/inducers be relevant here?

Sorry...but this is new to me and I'm still trying to figure it all out.

philly,

his doctor who did those tests should have answers.

It's all very complex, though, and most doctors may not take the time. It's way over my head.

Find an expert in this area but also realize that any toxicity can complicate the picture. Any.

There's one link in that set of herbs that can help those with porphyria. You might look there.

Find that author's website if there is on (or even contact their office) to get referrals of professionals they may recommend in your area.

The Porphyria organizations will have lists of doctors, too.

She did explain it to me but it was over my head as well! Lol.

I wanted to list the foods/herbs on the list I have but wasn't exactly sure if it was relevant.

Go here..... http://medicine.iupui.edu/clinpharm/ddis/ .......then click on CYTOCHROME P450 DRUG INTERACTION TABLE
