My husband came home from his mother's and found an embedded deer tick on his stomach. We went to www.treatthebite.com and followed the instructions.

There was a welt at the site but it has gone down. No bulls eye rash.

I have a lot of minocycline so he immediately started 200 mg per day.

Does he need doxy rather than mino?

How long do you think he should be treated and at what amount of med?

Should he bother to see a doctor or just keep treating with my mino?

Did you save the tick? If so, I would send it to IgeneX for testing even though it may not be 100% reliable.

I think Doxy is the med of choice for a new infection because it can treat Lyme, Ehrlichiosis (Anaplasmosis), and RMSF. Typically 200 mg twice a day is prescribed.

I would check Dr. B's guidelines at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf Personally, I would treat for at least two to three months and longer if symptomatic.

If you have a Lyme doctor, I would call him/her for advice.

And with doxy, sun avoidance & protection is required. Sun burns can happen even through a car window even after a few weeks after stopping doxy.

Some have even needed driving gloves (light cotton) may be needed. Most pharmacies have thin white cotton gloves that may work - or thicker cotton gardening gloves?

A different Rx to address the cyst form is really VERY important.

Be sure no tick mouth parts remain embedded.

Hope you were able to get a photo of that welt.

Doxy covers things like ehrlichiosis, which can be deadly if not treated quickly.

He needs 200mg of doxy twice a day. I would want 6 wks worth myself.

Doxy, Biaxin, and Flagyl for 3 months min.
Better to hit it hard and strong, rather than deal with the hell down the road.

I have a call into my LLMD and havent heard back.

Meanwhile my husband got a prescription from one of his doctors for 200mg 2x a day for 5 days and then 100 mg 2x a day for another 20 days.

If we assume he can't get into my LLMD, should we take the doxy at the 200mg 2x a day rate until the prescription used up (15days) and then switch to the minocycline that I have (it isnt expired)?

No we didn't get a picture and I hope we got all the parts. We can get a picture now - I think he still has some kind of welt.

Coincidentally my dog came up lame today, went to the vet and tested positive for lyme. The vet gave my dog 200 mg 2x a day for 30 days. My husband would have been better off getting treated by the vet.

Yes, vets take things more seriously than MD's!!!

Go to a walk-in clinic for more meds. Just don't say you already have some.

Take photos.
