My son contracted Lyme, Babs, and Bart about the time he turned three. After almost two years of treatment, he was doing well and has continued

to do so. Great energy, gained weight, played soccer, and living a normal life.

Today he complained about joint pain in his thumb for a little while before we went

swimming. After swimming where he was giving himself quite a workout, he was near tears about

his knees hurting. When I looked at them they were swollen, red and warm to touch.

Anyone have an idea if it's lyme related, or something else? He doesn't have a fever, but

doesn't even want to walk it's hurting so. He did start swim team a couple weeks ago (with

some two practice days in there), and has had a bit less sleep too due to a busy schedule.

Thanks for any thoughts, I really thought he was done with this, now I'm wondering again...

I used to have alot of knee pain when i wrestled. I also still have knee pain and have for many years. Mine was definately not lyme. I would however get it checked out if you can, to me knee pain is worse than back pain. On alot of days pre-lyme they would swell up and its also not uncommon for my knee caps to hurt. My knees are so tender if i bump them on something hard i fall to the ground. I have broken bones in my life and this is worse for me. My point is dont mess around and let any knee damage become permanent if you can help it.

Parasites/worms play a HUGE role as a co-infection in Lyme and is often overlooked even by LLMDs. Dr. K. in a recent conference suggested that Parasites are FIRST to treat and Lyme is secondary.

This is one of the reasons people relapse if left untreated. You can do ansearch on here by typing parasites into search bar at the top.

Thumb hurting and now painful, red, swollen knees in a young child? Sounds like it is time to make a call to the lyme doc to get his opinion.

You know that what you are describing regarding the knees is a classic lyme symptom.

He was doing soooo well for about a year and a half, I really thought we were "done". Today his knees feel better, but he has gone from a swollen red painful ankle first thing this morning, to about an hour ago coming to tell me two fingers, "hurt", which upon examination are also swollen around the joints and red.

So could his activity level being higher than it had been, have allowed the Lyme bacteria to become active again.

I'm really trying to wrap my head around heading back into this fight again. Sigh... [Frown]

I'd been rescheduling his appointments for the past 6 months of so since he was doing so well, figured I'd let someone else have the docs time, and are actually set for a followup visit on Wednesday so at least we can get in quickly.

That's good! Hard to say about a correlation between activity and Lyme...?

Just to update here, my little guy had a second lyme infection last spring, that we got through with two strong abx for 30 days. I was happy that his second case was acute and short lived, with no co-infections but it was such a huge reminder of where we'd been. Thankfully, he's feeling great and super active this year, hoping we stay that way and avoid those nasty horrid ticks...
