Between only one of my daughter's new prescriptions and the Mepron, refilling zith and omnicef I have spent over $2300.00 at the pharmacy this week. (Big chunk was Mepron at over 1700.)
I really want to cry.
I am scared about starting my daughter in treatment and feel like I didn't really get great communication from her Dr.
But what I really want to know is how to time Mepron and does it need fat with the meal as Malarone does? Can I take it with the other abx.
Really bad day today. Too much going on....I also started Diflucan last week (200 mg once a week), and I think I may be experiencing some die off. Still have a white tongue though......
Thanks for any advice...

I got really tired and flu-like on Mepron. I also had pretty high liver enzymes and needed to stop it a few times despite aggressive liver detox.
You should take it with fat. I used to take it with coconut milk ice cream. The no-sugar added kind. I also took it with other antibiotics (clindamycin and then doxy/zith).
I hope you start to feel better soon. I have the Candida issue in my mouth also. I found liquid nystatin gets rid of it, but I have to keep taking it all the time.

I did not have any problems with it. I think you can take it with other antibiotics. Be sure to take it with lots of fat...i think its like 30g or something? I would take it with olive oil on a salad, nuts or a bacon, egg and cheese mcmuffin with mayo (homemade and extremely fattening, fried in butter!) I definetly had my fat quotient.
Coconut milk ice cream sounds much healthier though! I did not notice herxing until around day 30, but I also added in Artemisinin then so Im not sure which caused it. Babesia herxes are rough for me. Very fatigued, weak, achy, sweaty ect..

Jamers..thinking of you lately with the yeast. I just took it with olive oil on a salad (and a little bacon and nuts too)
I started art last month so I am hoping the herxing won't be as bad. LLMD said to expect a little worse or the same of what I am feeling on Art.
The 1700 goes toward our 5000 deductible.
bigstan thanks so much. I really appreciate it. The entire staff at the pharmacy was apologizing.....like it was their fault!
Hope this works. I hope I won't be on it for too long.
Thank you all for your help.

I'm not sure PME. I took it twice for 2 months each time and both times my liver enzymes got pretty high which made my LLMD nervous and I had to immediately stop taking it.
This was with ALA, NAC, glutathione IV's, liver detox teas and milk thistle. I had liver function tests weekly.
My main babesia symptoms were weight loss, high fever at onset, chills, dizziness etc. I haven't had improvement in those. I never had severe night sweats, but I've had some mild ones.
So now we are taking a break from babesia treatment and going after bartonella.

I took it with eggs, bacon or more often, peanut butter.
The "ick" factor was a little hard to overcome and might be offputting for a child. It didn't actually taste all that bad, just looked unappealing.
I do want to add that depression/low mood can be a side effect of Mepron, and it can appear after you've been on it for a while without problems. I had this happen after about three months on it, and I only knew what it was thanks to the info that someone had so helpfully posted on here. I stopped the Mepron and the symptoms went away within two days. Not sure how this would manifest in a child but just something to be aware of just in case.
Between, it, Art and Zith, it knocked my babesia way back to where I didn't have any symptoms (that I could pinpoint to babs at least) but unfortunately since I had to stop it prematurely, some of the symptoms eventually came back.

Hey wp. It is me who is taking mepron not my daughter. Thanks for the info and sorry for the confusion. Just started my daughter on zith this morning. So we are both treating
Anxiety and depression seem to go hand in hand with herxing for me. I think the artis effective so I am hoping I won't have to be on mepron long. My poor liver already. For some reason other than the price tag this one scares me.

Just want to point out that Mepron can cause a severe depression. It had my friend planning various ways to kill herself.
So, that is the scary side effect of mepron. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it gives many "the blues." There is even an old thread called "Mepron blues." Do a search for it.
If you ever get to the point where you are planning how to kill yourself, just know that then you must stop the Mepron.
If you get pretty depressed, you may need to stop the mepron temporarily and then restart it. Many have said that this took care of the depression side effect.
So, that is important to know.

How did your daughter's coinfection testing turn out?

I've been on Mepron for over two years. It resolved the majority of my symptoms. I'm afraid to go off of it as it's the last drug we will stop. I did not herx on Mepron but it did take six months to see benefits.
I got a slight case of the Mepron blues but after a month or so, stopped the drug for a few days, and restarted with no additional problems.

I also got depressed on it. I have a tough time recognizing depression with myself. I finally figured out that when my house starts getting full of clutter with stuff that I'd normally put away, but let pile up, then that's when I'm actually depressed.
I was on mepron, zyth and amox, along with artemsinin and cats claw. I took them all at once, including the herbs and fat.
I felt fantastic after 2 mos (tons of energy), but then failed it halfway through my 3rd month. I read somewhere that zyth causes failure when mixed with mepron (don't know if this is true, but that's what happened with me).
Mepron also gave me yeast. Pme, your doc sounds like the one I used to see. He didn't have me on enough probiotics.

One item we found helpfull is to use a plastic syringe to draw the medicine out of he bottle. There is also an adaptor to put in the bottle top.
I think after the first purchase the pharmacy provided these items free in sympathy for the cost of the med (I assume your price is for 2 months supply).
This eliminated spilling (we lost half a month worth one time) and then once the medicine is shot in the mouth we would draw water a few times into the syringe to ensure the full does.
Good luck as this was a medicine our daughter tolerated relatively well.

Right now I am feeling no effects from the Mepron, except trouble sleeping and some bad dreams.
I also feel bloated and toxic. Need to detox even more I guess. Not sure what else to do.
TF.....they did not test my daughter for coinfections that I know of. Just treating for Lyme right now. I was worried about her tolerance of abx, but just realized yesterday that the reason she did not tolerate some of them is because it was a herx. It is unbelievable how clear things become (some) regarding her history in light of the diagnosis. I guess I will ask about coinfections at the next visits.
I am thinking I may change to my doctor for her also though. I feel the communication there is so excellent. Thanks TF
