My husband and daughter catch the occasional cold and flu when they seem to be 'going around'. I don't.

I only get a few "bad" days and maybe a sore throat and I think I'm catching it, but it never progresses into the sniffles and coughs, etc., that the rest get.

Either my immune system is awesome or just not working much at all. Which is it?

Most symptoms of colds/flu are from the immune response to the bug rather than the bug itself. Therefore, I'd suspect immune suppression to be more likely in the setting of Lyme/coinfections.

Really good animation!!!

T helper cells are already up and running.(CD4)

"We have started to test the hypothesis that in patients with treatment-resistant Lyme arthritis,

a T helper cell response induced by one or more/B burgdorferi antigens

results in chronic synovial inflammation."

http://jem.rupress.org/content/180/6/2069.full.pdf

CD4 cells...

Today at least 4 distinct CD4 T-cell subsets have been shown to exist, Th1, Th2, Th17, and iTreg cells

http://bloodjournal.hematologylibrary.org/content/112/5/1557.full

Read the abstractin the link above (scroll down to it)...especially the very last sentence...the last few words.

Th17 cells are implicated in MS.

The immune system is NOT suppressed in lyme, but is harmed/wounded/damaged and is forced to go in a wrong direction.

The pathway to destroy Bb is the lectin pathway which would totally chop him up into tiny bits and pieces.

And the other pathway called the classic pathway involves our antibodies. Our antibody to Bb's OspB is damaged. And in chronic lyme, OspB reigns.

All that is left is the alternative pathway.

What happens is this...

The classic pathway and the lectin pathway and the alternative pathway all "meet" at C3 - an area to chop up Bb's proteins.

But...the classic and lectin pathway work "upstream" and cleave/chop C1, C2 and C4

BEFORE

getting to C3.

Which means...we don't/can't fully cleave Bb's proteins...which are antigens that we constantly react to.

Thanks for the information, Marnie. Very informative as always!

I must say that an immune system that is harmed/wounded/damaged and forced to go in a wrong direction is an immune system which is quite effectively suppressed!

I'm pretty sure that the reason some of us don't catch colds in the classic sense (sniffles et al), is because our immune systems are either; a) overloaded, b) suppressed, c) watching Friends reruns, or d) All of the above.
