I have read many posts where people have taken antibiotics for "years" without much improvement. Then, they go to a clinic or other alternative therapy and reach remission.
Since they reached remission at this other clinic or treatment, they credit that particular treatment.
Couldn't the antibiotics helped them to reach remission? It is my understanding that the immune system has to eventually kick in.
Since I am on an antibiotic protocol, it can be really discouraging to hear how antibiotics failed.

I am fairly "green" here so I don't have much info to share. What I have learned is that even many homeopaths agree that antibiotics are necessary to treat Lyme and co''s. I definitely agree with you that the ABX do have a place in any Lyme treatment protocol.

The abx got me to a certain point, yes. But I never could get all the way. I seriously crashed off them. Then I went for an alternative treatment and got well. If the abx had gotten me there, I wouldn't have crashed so seriously every time I stopped taking them.
I crashed, started the alternative treatment, and just got better and better. It was never like that with abx.
They do have their uses. But I don't think years and years are the answer.

I and 3-4 of my friends got rid of lyme and company by going to doctors who followed the Burrascano protocol. This is primarily thought of as a high-dose antibiotic combination protocol but it also includes supplements, diet, and a certain type of exercise. All 4 prongs are required, according to Burrascano. It is not just meds.
There is no one guaranteed way to get rid of these diseases as of this date. Different approaches work for different people.
I understand that Burrascano was extremely successful using his protocol and that many in New York were cured by going to him. One person in NY told me that he runs into these people all of the time.
Some of us believe that the exercise requirement in Burrascano and in other protocols may be the common denominator for those who get cured. Burrascano says it is essential to get well, my lyme doctor said it was essential to get well, and the other doctors I recommend say the same thing.
So, if you are on an antibiotic only protocol, it would be wise to add the other 3 prongs of the Burrascano protocol to your daily routine. You don't need a doctor to do these.
The exercise must be non-aerobic. He recommends weight lifting/calesthenics for 1 hour every other day. You may have to take more rest days in between at first. You work up to the every other day routine. Read all about it and how the exercise is believed to help achieve a remission in the Guidelines.
I believe sixgoofykids is the one that pointed out that she and I both did exercise and both achieved remission.
It has now been over 7 years since I completed my lyme treatment and I am still symptom-free, enjoying my life. I have the same life I had before lyme disease.
I had lyme, babs, and bart, and I went undiagnosed at least 10 years prior to beginning treatment.

For those of us who have major nerve and muscle pain exercise is really tough. Unfortunately any that i have tried has resulted in majpr pain issues for me. I believe sixgoofy kids went to Germany for treatment so that may have helped achieve remission as well.

I have just joined this network and have Lyme since last month. I am on oral antibiotics and having a lot of problems with the Lyme symptoms and having GI issues due to the antibiotics. Does anyone know a good doctor in DC/ Northern Va area? Going to Germany is not an option.

- Sehat,
Hope you get some specific names. In the meantime if you want want someone who is well versed with complementary methods to help your GI Issues:
When considering herbal / nutritional / adjunct methods:
if at all possible - because each person & each case is different - it's best to consult with an ILADS-educated LL (lyme literate) doctor who has completed four years of post-graduate medical education in the field of herbal and nutritional medicine -
- and someone who is current with ILADS' research & presentations, past and present.
Many LL NDs incorporate antibiotics (depending upon the licensing laws in their state). Some LLMDs and LL NDs have good working relationships.
When possible, it's great to have both a LLMD and LL ND and even better when they have a long-standing professional relationship.
Integrative / Holistic M.D., etc. (Be aware that those in this category can have various levels of formal herbal &/or nutritional education, perhaps even just a short course. Do ask first.)
Links to many articles and books by holistic-minded LL doctors of various degrees who all have this basic approach in common:
Understanding of the importance of addressing the infection(s) fully head-on with specific measures from all corners of medicine;
knowing which supplements have direct impact, which are only support and which are both.
LIVER, ADRENAL and MITOCHONDRIAL SUPPORT are key elements.
You can compare and contrast many approaches.

I thank you all for sending me such valuable information. I have always been taking care of everything and everyone. Since I found the tick on my back, no one (including myself) seem to understand why I cannot function. I am so glad that you understand this disease and help us newcomers find our way.
