Editing to Add:

See Marnie's post below. When I posted to READ all about it first, I assume that everyone will read her past posts, consult with their doctor and generally consider all possible interactions BEFORE making a decision.

Marnie's post below better details that but also do search the many posts in recent months by her on this topic.

--------------

The kind Marnie has posted is called

http://www.goodstate.com/product/GlycoX-250-with-Berberine-HCL-250mg-90-Capsules-/247

GlycoX 250 contains Berberine HCL and Banaba Leaf Extract.

------------
Always start with one with food, middle of the day. Wait until you see how that goes.

Ideally, one 3 x day half hour before meals.

READ all about it first, as is good with anything we consider.

Be mindful of how this can affect blood glucose levels, for the better, but if one is hypoglycemic, that needs to be considered with timing and food consumption. Not take withOUT food to follow.

Just click onto Marnie's name to see her past posts. Some threads have the Berberine "headline" but many have headlines that do not mention the key term, so you have to open each recent post to see what it's about. Worth it, though.

You might also consider the actual herbal sources, whole herbs or herb extracts for plant that contain Berberine. I posted some of that detail in Marnie's threads, too.

Goldenseal, Coptis, Oregon Grape Root are just a few Berberine-containing herbs.

When considering herbal / nutritional / adjunct methods:

if at all possible - because each person & each case is different - it's best to consult with an ILADS-educated LL (lyme literate) doctor who has completed four years of post-graduate medical education in the field of herbal and nutritional medicine -

- and someone who is current with ILADS' research & presentations, past and present.

Many LL NDs incorporate antibiotics (depending upon the licensing laws in their state). Some LLMDs and LL NDs have good working relationships.

When possible, it's great to have both a LLMD and LL ND and even better when they have a long-standing professional relationship.

How to find an ILADS-educated LL:

N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor);

L.Ac. (Acupuncturist);

D.Ay. (Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine);

D.O.M. (Doctor of Oriental Medicine);

Integrative / Holistic M.D., etc. (Be aware that those in this category can have various levels of formal herbal &/or nutritional education, perhaps even just a short course. Do ask first.)

Links to many articles and books by holistic-minded LL doctors of various degrees, etc.

HERBAL SAFETY & INTERACTION LINKS, too.

You can get it from Swanson Vitamins (on-line). It's about $10 a bottle there for their own brand.

PLEASE to NOT take this supplement

***without confirming this with your doctor ***

It is critical we are sure there is a POSITIVE interaction with ANYTHING else you maybe already taking.

Example: Tamoxifen for breast cancer is a man-made PKC inhibitor that ***blocks chloride channels.***

While it works great with EPA (omega 3)and they have a synergy, it would NOT work with berberine chloride.

Block the chloride channel or send in a "chemical" via the (already active)open chloride channel.

Two ways to look at this...block or send in.

There ARE many links to berberine's effectiveness for several cancers...breast, prostate, cervical, etc.

AND...there is a man-made IgG1k anti-cancer drug too that is an ANTIBODY:

Trastuzumab (Herceptin) is a humanized IgG1 kappa light chain mAb. It is used to treat breast cancer.

Omalizumab is a recombinant DNA-derived humanized IgG1k monoclonal
antibody that selectively binds to free human immunoglobulin E (IgE)- specifically IgE Fc. (For asthma)

IMO...both lyme patients AND MS patients sure could have used THAT very specific antibody - IgG1k...the kappa (light chain) is the missing component.

http://www.jimmunol.org/content/early/2010/08/25/jimmunol.1001393.full.pdf

While it appears we DO respond with IgG1...it is the "k" that is missing.

Oregon grape and barberry also contain berberine and are helpful for a many infections as well as for healing the liver.

Oregon grape tincture can be purchased at iherb. Powders can be purchased in bulk from mountain rose herbs and other quality organic herbal sellers.

Hope this helps ~

I have also used the Metagenics Candibactin BR to excellent use. It has berberine HCL and coptis, as well as a couple other items.

Yup...healing the liver (which IMO takes a real "hit" in lyme at the outset) is critical to healing.

IF doing NOTHING else (!!!)...

Try Berberine chloride 250mg TID 15 min. before meals for starters (GlycoX)... one month trial.

Then ramp up to the (gov. allowed amt.) i.e., 500mg TID 15 minutes before meals.

Do NOT do this in conjunction with ANY other Rx or supplement unless you are SURE they have a synergy effect (work together)!
