Hi everyone. I started taking Rifampin 150 mg on November 27 once a day then on November 30 I upped it to twice a day. Yesterday I started to notice everytime I take it, I get a burning itchy full feeling in my ears. Is this an allergic reaction or has anyone else experienced this with Rifampin? Please help.

That could be an allergic reaction. I would definitely call your doctor and see what they advise.

Could it be part of a herx? Can a herx cause you to feel a burning, itchy full feeling in ears and congested, with burning eyes.

Doesn't really sound like a herx to me.

Any time there itching it is best to check with your doc. An allergic reaction is nothing to fool around with as it can quickly turn serious. Several yrs ago I had this happen with keflex, a med I had taken fine several times before. I ended up in the hospital unable to breathe and had to stay for 3 days.

It came on slow. I even went to the ER and they said they felt it was not the keflex and to continue it....Well I was back the next day in a full blown attack, covered with hives, wheezing and it was definitely the keflex.

I recently had a blood test to check for allergies to cephalosporins and it came back postitive for alleregic.

No one on here is really equipped to say if you are experiencing an allergic reaction or a herx. I have heard stories of people sticking with a med with horrible issues assuming it was a herx onl;y to find out it was an allergy or a side effect.

Call your doc

I don't know what to do. I called my llmd and they told me to stay on it and see what happens - it could be an allergic reaction or it could be a herx. The symptom is an itchy burning feeling in my ears that is still with me even though my last rifampin was at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. I am scared to take it this morning.

Has anyone on this board experienced itchy burning ears and burning skin as part of a herx?

You might try some sweet oil drops in them in case its the meds stirring the bugs up. I liked to soak deep in Espsoms soaks to get it in ears and then use the sweet oil after they dried out.

Hi all. I just wanted to post back and say the burning in the ears went away and now I have itching in my upper back. Still taking the meds. I want to believe it is a herx and not allergy because yesterday I took the meds (afraid but I took them) and I didn't feel anything - no itching, no burning, nothing). I imagine an allergic reaction would be everytime you take the med and getting worse.

What I am noticing now is an increase in blood pressure? Anyone gets this with herxing?
