I found out I'm sensitive to sulfites. They make me swell up... esp my feet!!
So no smoked meats or BBQ .. (just kill this Texan now)!
Does that mean I can't have onions??

I was ok with onions for quite a while before I had to stop eating them. So it depends on how sensitive to sulfites you are.
Anyway, the nutritional way around the sensitivity is best implemented sooner rather than later:
Low sulfur/sulfite diet...PM me with your email address and I'll send you the huge list of sulfite-containing foods.
Low taurine diet (i.e., vegetarian proteins are superior because they are lower in taurine).
Molybdenum supplements
Zinc supplements
Magnesium supplements
Iron, if deficient.
Digestive enzymes & probiotics.
Vitamin B12 - hydroxycobolamin is best form to start with...then once sulfites aren't bothering you so much you can try methylcobolamin. May need both injections and oral B12.
To stop a sulfite reaction after you've already consumed something with sulfites:
Antihistamines Vitamin B12 (a huge dose - 5000mcg or more orally plus may need a B12 shot) Molybdenum
If you're anaphylactic like me, you also should have an epipen on hand. Even though there are sulfites in the epipen, it is better to take the epi than to risk not treating the severe reaction.

I found out that I had forgotten to take my Nexium yesterday morning. Didn't realize it until about 8pm when I decided to "take another one." My pain was just terrible and since I had eaten some onions I was blaming the pain on that.
I realized when I went to get the med that I had NOT taken it in the morning. I'm still suffering today and I have a Christmas party to attend in the next 30 min. ARRGGHH

Hi Lymetoo. Hope you are feeling better and able to enjoy that party.
I made it thru the party. I actually was able to eat. I took Donnatal to get me thru. My sweet friend fixed things I could eat. I was so hoping I could eat what she had gone to the trouble of preparing for me! WHEW!
I even have leftovers!

Tammy's link tells high sulfur foods. The sulfite food list is different. Some foods may be low in elemental sulfur, but may be high in sulfites - gelatin is just one such example.

I swell up when eating too much sulfur too but I have the CBS upregulation which seems to mean that sometimes I'm sensitive to sulfur and sometimes I'm not. Are you sure it's a sensitivity and not a CBS upregulation? If it's the methylation issue you can treat that to some extent.

I have the CBS up regulation and never realized I was sensitive to sulfur. You can get urine strips to measure the sulfates. Mine were the highest they could be for months. They finally began to drop but will go back up if I am not careful.
Some of the highest foods are meat, eggs, cabbage, mustard and carrageenen ( in Greek Yogurt). Then onions, garlic, kale, spinach, brussel sprouts, soy, soy sauce and peas.

Terry.. I just know that I swell up when I eat sulfites. I'll have to look at the list again, but when I looked at it I realized that many foods there also cause me stomach pain, like fermented foods.

MY BF is allergic to sulfites. I believe they are quite different from the sulfur in vegetables.
Black Olives are sulfited and he can get asthma by eating more than 3 or 4 (which is a bummer because he loves them)! Also, any kind of red wine or sherry can set him off for days!
Smoked anything - fish, oysters, deli meats (like smoked turkey) are a no no.
You can likely find barbecue sauce that does NOT have "liquid smoke" in it. Otherwise, you could make your own, which is really easy.

Sulfites are a breakdown product of sulfur. I was trying to say that you may not have a sensitivity but may instead have a genetic issue that causes issues with sulfur.

AuntyLynn - My husband had a bad case of asthma. Years ago we put him on molybdenum and selenium and he was able to completely stop 2 of his asthma meds and cut one down to 1/2 dose.

Great to know selenium and molybdenum help Asthma...I cannot tolerate most Asthma medication, and am low in selenium. Interesting!
Just started a product called Pic-Mins (made by Thorne Research) that has molybdenum and selenium (and other trace minerals) and so we'll see if I will need asthma meds as much come Springtime...

No beer, either. I had a reaction years ago to a wheat beer that was extra sulfited. I think they even put it in vodka.I don't drink wine because of extra sulfites some manufacturers throw in their to create a more consistent product. I don't have an asthma flare, but it behaves like a food intolerance-- cramping, diarrhea, and finally vomitting. Pleasant symptoms for a fine dining experience! I seek out unsulfited dried fruit and really like Turkish apricots--they are brown (oxidized) but taste wonderful.

Yup, that's the same sequence of events I get for my nasty sulfite reactions...it sux...
But I was in the midst of having a severe reaction last month and was able to put a stop to it with a Vitamin B12 shot, a big dose of oral Vitamin B12, a Molybdenum supplement, and antihistamines (I use Claritin).

This thread really has me wondering if this is a major issue for me. How do you definitely diagnose it? I am not anaphylactic for sure, but have severe inflammation. I eat onions every day almost, some smoked stuff. My eyes water endlessly like a terrible allergy.
I did not handle Bactrim DS well at all. Seemed like an allergic reaction almost.

Which is saying the opposite of what all of you are saying in regards to Yasko, etc. I don't think the genetic testing is "written in stone". One of the things that the article mentions is that our foods are being grown with fertilizers containing sulfites.
So, it might be in alot more foods than the ones mentioned.
I'm not saying one is right or one is wrong - it's just complicated. I know I don't feel well if I drink wine & I'm not fond of beer but I'm OK with alcohol if it's hard liquor like tequilla, gin or vodka. I'm not a big drinker in any case.
seekhelp - my nose runs constantly in the winter. I just thought it was normal... I lived in the south for a few years & it didn't happen down there. I think it might actually be leaf mold. The have different kinds of trees down south than in the northeast.
The other thing I read recently is that B12 may be bad to take if you have a problem with mercury... This is from Dr. Huggins' protocol for removing mercury -
Be absolutely certain that your IV during the dental procedures contains NO Vitamin B-12. B-12 in any form is a methylator, and methyl mercury is extremely damaging to your nervous System.

And yes, I can attest that most fruits/veggies are grown with sulfites...I get sulfite reactions from most all fruits & veggies, even organic ones.

Apparently, there are some fungicides and fertilizers that contain sulfites.
That's all I know, plus my own reactions to many foods that are supposedly safe for us with sulfite sensitivity because of no naturally occurring sulfites...
My sulfite sensitivity level is extreme...most with sulfite sensitivity can eat way more sulfites than I can and have no reaction.

I'm not sure if it's just with IV or if it's current. I'd have to look into it further...
We just don't know all the possible interactions of what we are doing. Take into account any chemicals we breathe or drink in water, as residue on fruit or veggies, in meat combine that with drugs or vitamins, supplements, herbs... We just don't know.
