Hi, all -
I've had Lyme for about 3 1/2 years now, and recently discovered that I have Babesia, too. I was talking to a friend last night, who is worried that her husband may have Lyme, and she mentioned that she has been researching essential oils, and that some people use them to treat Lyme. That idea is very appealing to me, but I have lots of questions...

1. Has anyone here had any experience, good or bad, with using essential oils to treat Lyme? Please share.

2. What essential oils are typically used? I would imagine there is some variation in the choice of oils, depending on one's symptoms...? If so, which oils have you used for which symptoms?

3. Could they be taken in conjunction with abx? Are there certain oils which should not be taken with abx, or with certain abx? I will be starting IV treatments soon; I am currently on cefdinir and azithromycin and mepron.

4. She mentioned that they could be taken orally as well as topically, but I have read that it is dangerous to ingest essential oils. Can anyone offer me any suggestions/things to read that might clarify this controversy?

5. Where is the best place to buy essential oils?

6. How much of each oil would I need in, say, a month?

...I think those are all the questions I have for now. I've probably forgotten one - you know how it is - but that's a start.

Thank you in advance for your help! [Razz]

I spoke to a lady several years ago that told me she was cured using essential oils. She also stressed the importance of maintaining an alkakine body. She gave me a site that sells those oils but it was a bit expensive so i didnt buy them.I may still have her email if you dont get the information you need.. [Smile]

The difference in essential oils that makes it safe vs. not safe to ingest is primarily the grade of the oil - perfume grade vs. medical grade.

Medical grade essential oils are usually safe to ingest internally as a general rule of thumb, but there are specific oils that should not be used internally in large quantity.

Perfume grade essential oils are only ok to use topically, never internally. This is because the oil may contain impurities, may be synthetic or partially synthetic, and thus may cause harm if ingested.

Young Living Essential Oils is the only company who has 100% of their oils as medical grade. This is info from a presentation given by a lady who has been in the perfume and essential oils business since the 1970's (I attended her presentation last month)...

Yes, it is ok to combine essential oils and abx, but the oils are very strong and this may trigger too much herxing. So go slowly and be careful.

Yes, the specific oils needed would depend partially on symptoms. However, there are some oils that are extremely helpful for killing the bugs themselves and these would likely be recommended for anyone with the specific infection for which the oil is indicated.

Example is Oregano oil is an extremely powerful antimicrobial and antifungal oil, and I would imagine most with Lyme would herx from taking Oregano oil internally.

I personally like Clove oil (Dr. S says this is one of the few substances that kills Bartonella) and Frankincense oil (Frankincense contains Boswellic acid, which is a strong anti-inflammatory) topically on joints that are hurting and inflamed.

I've also read that Cistus oil is good for those with Lyme.

There are good oils for dealing with the anxiety and depression of Lyme/coinfections also - but some of these should not be mixed with prescription antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications.

From a post to a Yahoo group on Bartonella:

The highest antimicrobial oils that have been clinically proven to kill gram pos, gram neg, protozoans, MRSA, e-coli, strep, h pylori, candida, and intracellular bacterias:

clove
mountain savory
rosemary
cinnamon
cistus (antimicrobial and clinically proven borrelia burgdoferi cyst buster)
thyme
oregano
