Hi guys,
Hope you're having a good day
My doctor is suggesting a significantly lower dose of Cefuroxime IV than suggested in the guidelines -- 3g/ day vs. 6-12g, as well as a shorter course of treatment - 6 weeks vs at least 14.
What are your thoughts? Effective, or just pi$$ the colony off?!

Six weeks is too short!!! Some doctors only give 2 grams once a day for 5 days a week and 2 off. Others do 2 grams twice a day for 5 days on and 2 off. I am sure you are on some orals too.
I don't think from what I have read that a short course like 6 weeks or even 14 weeks is going to help. In fact, most of what I read says it is going to make things worse for you.
Any one else want to chime in on this one. I am sure Keebler has a good arsenal to list of why this is not a good thing to do.

Came out of remission (again), neuro-lyme, started me on Cefuroxime IVs, too expensive so we went to on 4.2gram injections (2, 2.1g) (hubby is my nurse), m-w-f for 4 weeks. Then tried moving me to orals... Cefdinir and Zithromax, had horrible seizures, put me back on Cefuroxime injections again 4 wks on, 1 week off.
I think this was because the herxes were too extreme.
I also take Mepron, and detox herbs, and on Lyme diet.

When you say Cefuroxime (brand name zinacef) do you mean to say ceftriaxone (rocephin)?
Most people here have heard of IV Rocephin, I'm not sure if many know of IV zinacef.
For the Rocephin, my doc prescribed 2g daily, every day for me. It did seem to work well (was on some other abx too). It helped reduce some of my symptoms within the first month.
I also tried 2g twice daily for 4 days and 3 days off with the ceftriaxone.
To address your original question, you can develop problems when you do not take enough medicine (high enough dose) for a long enough time. This can cause resistance.
The bacteria/parasites can become harder to treat in your body. You will then have to use stronger combos of medicines for longer periods of time to wipe them out. And sometimes you may not be successful in treating them.
