Background - It has been 8 years since my husband and I were succesfully treated for Lyme and Babesia.

Very recently we were on vacation in Norway and found a tick on our 9 year old son on July 4. We think it was on him for about 4 hours. I removed and saved it. We were not able to go to a doctor because the next morning we flew to Russia for the second part of our trip. He has shown no symptoms. Around the tick bite it was a little red for about 3 days and cleared up with no EM.

I am going to take him to his regular doctor and ask for ABX for as long as I can get it. Our LLMD from years ago has long since retired.

My question for all of you is:

1) What antibiotic and the dosage? Based on Burrascano we should use Amox at 50mg. But my child weighs about 95 lbs and not sure if this is enough. When giving amox to adults he also perscribes probenecid, should this also be given to a child?

2) I want to get the tick tested, is Igenex still the best place? What about European strains can testing facilities here test for those strains?

3) If the tick was infected would my child have started to have symptoms by now?

4) If a LLMD doctor exists in our area, Houston please send a message.

Thank you!! This board was a life saver for us 9 year ago. Did not this this would be happening to us again.

1) Page 18 of Burrascano says:

"Children: 50 mg/kg/day divided into q8h doses"

In English this says: 50 mg per kilogram per day divided into every 8 hour doses.

So, you have to give your child 50 mg per kilogram of weight. 95 pounds = 43 kilograms So, you will need 2,150 mg of amoxi per day for your child.

I would want the probinecid added because it keeps the body from filtering out the amoxi in an hour or so. This way, the amoxi will stay in the body a number of hours.

I didn't weigh that much more than 95 pounds when I was treating, so I really think that the probinecid would be fine for him.

I weighed 112 lbs and I was on 1,500 mg of amoxi every 8 hours plus the probinecid. So, I took 4,500 mg per day. I really think the 2,100 mg is on the light side. Perhaps, as you near an adult weight, the formula needs adjusted. Adults take 1,000 mg every 8 hours as a minimum.

I doubt you will find any non-lyme specialist who will give you medication for your situation! Good luck.

2) Igenex is likely the best and only place to get the tick tested. I would call them and ask if they could test for European strains. They are very nice to talk to and very helpful.

3) All I will say about this question is that the most famous pediatric lyme doctor in the world will NOT treat an asymptomatic child. He says, "Leave well enough alone." So, if the tick had lyme but your child's immune system is handling it, then he will not have symptoms. And, this doctor is saying to leave the child alone in that situation.

4) I hear that there is only one lyme doctor in the entire state of Texas. I have no idea if this doc treats children. I suggest you post in "Seeking a Doctor" forum and ask if there are any pediatric lyme doctors in Texas. If not, where is the nearest one.

Now, speaking from personal experience, I had undiagnosed lyme (and babesiosis and bartonella) for at lest 10 years before a doctor thought to test me for lyme. I lost at least 5 years of my life to this disease. I got rid of it over 8 years ago and I am still symptom-free, enjoying my life.

With that said, at first when we would find attached ticks (some engorged) on my husband, I would ask his pcp for doxy for him. I pushed for 1 month or at least 2 weeks of it.

Over the years, with my husband normally finding 3 ticks attached to him each summer, I have gotten to where now we just watch the bite area for the bulls eye rash and I watch my husband closely for suspicious symptoms for a few months after each bite. Otherwise, I would be trying to get him doxy all summer long every summer!

So, I guess you could say I have calmed down over the years, plus it has become virtually impossible for me to get any of his doctors to prescribe the treatment I would like for each of these bites.

I hope you have kept the tick moist. Igenex says to put a moist cotton ball in with the tick so that it doesn't dry out. This way, there is a better chance that the test will be able to be done, be accurate, etc.

Hope this helps you.

Went to my child's GP today and they did not want to perscribe anything, I had a sinking feeling that would happen but do not a choice being that I'm in Houston. So now I'm really starting to get worried.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do? I don't want to drag my child around to every doctor hoping to get a perscription and worry the heck out of him. I'm trying my best not for him to tell I'm out of my mind worried.

If anyone knows of a DR pleas PM me.

Also I want to get the tick tested. What is the best lab?
