What's the usual dosage for Amoxicillin with Lyme?
My prescription just came in at 4 500mg caps at 3x a day = 6000mg a day. This sounds high to me and so I think it's a mistake.
I've only seen 2000-3000mg a day.
Trying to get a hold of my doc to find out.

I did 5 500 mg caps 3x/day 7500mg/day
I could have done a lower dose if I had been able to take Probenecid. Even at 7500mg/day it wasn't enough to cross the blood brain barrier.
I think it had to be 15 and my blood work showed I was only at 12.

That's not a mistake.
See the dosage Burrascano recommends on page 18:
"*Amoxicillin- Adults: 1g q8h plus probenecid 500mg q8h; doses up to 6 grams daily are often needed"
In English, this says: 1 gram every 8 hours plus probenecid 500 mg every 8 hours; doses up to 6 grams daily, etc.
I was put on 1,500 mg every 8 hours 3 times per day, for a total of 4.5 grams per day. I weighed 110 pounds at the time. So, 6 grams is a great dose! It should work well for you.
I got rid of lyme on amoxi and probinecid with flagyl added in at the end.

Wow. So, I wasn't presribed probenecid. Does Burrascano mean 6g with the probenecid or without?
At what dose would amoxicillin become toxic?

Are you allergic to sulfa? That's the reason I wasn't prescribed Probenecid.
I did 7.5 gms. That must have been the cut off for me as that was the highest they would go with me. I was around 115 lbs at that time.

You are to take 500 mg of probinecid with each dose of amoxi. If you don't, the amoxi is out of your system in no time at all. The probinecid keeps the body from filtering out the amoxi.
Amoxi has a very short half-life (like 1 1/2 to 2 hours, half of it is gone), so you really, really want the probinecid.
Up to 6 grams just of amoxi per day.
The probinecid is a separate amount. Don't add them together.
I have no idea when amoxi becomes toxic. If you don't take probinecid with it, it is eliminated so quickly that perhaps it would never become toxic.
When I got my amoxi prescription filled, the bottle was nearly as big as a quart of milk! But, it worked great!

Given that probenecid raises concentrations of amoxicillin, would the max reccommended dose for amoxicillin be lower when taken with probenecid?
In other words, if I am taking probenecid, would I be taking perhaps 3000mg of amoxicillin instead of 6000mg?
Also, does probenecid mess with renal excretion of other things? Does it mess with electrolytes or other drugs?

You can take 6 grams (6,000 mg) per day of amoxi along with probinecid.
That is what Burrascano recommends.
3,000 mg would be low and would likely not work. How much do you weigh?
I would have to research probenecid to answer your questions about renal excretion. Suggest you do this if you have concerns.
I took the probenecid along with the amoxi. I don't think it messed with my electrolytes at all.
Without the probenecid, you will not be continuously killing lyme.
Probenecid does not raise concentrations of amoxi. Rather, it keeps it at a more steady concentration. Without it, you get rid of the amoxi very quickly and have no med in your blood stream most of the day.

Wikipedia says probinecid can increase drugs like lorazepam too. Some Docs may not want to do that?

This thread is concerning, I'm only on 775mg twice daily of an extended release brand of Amoxil. I've been told that this is plenty.

One of my son's went up to what I thought was an incredibly high dose of amox, 4,000 mgs. Glad to read the info on this thread. His prior doc had him on what appears to be a low dose for over a year. Wish I knew then, what I know now!
I am off to google probenicid.

Sammy, maybe it's because it's extended release?
I would think you would have a more steady blood level as opposed to plain amoxicillin.
