Hi all,
I've had the runs since Sunday night. I thought it could have been maybe bad food or because of menstruation.

I thought I was in the clear today, but I just had diarrhea again and it was more watery than yesterday.

Other than the runs, I feel my usual lyme self.

Are there signs I should look for?
I am still taking my abx.
Should I get a culture right away, or should I wait to see if it resolves on it's own?

I have been doing s&c every day. I'm up to 1 tsp of each. Could that be a possible cause?

Thanks [Smile]

Talk with your doctor.

Have you eaten any cheese? There is a current listeria warning from some cheese from Wisconsin (not sure if Canada imports cheese from Wisconsin or not but do check). For a start:

S & C = Salt & Vitamin C

Yes, this may be causing diarrhea.

Are you taking probiotics?

One thing to try would be charcoal tablets. They bind toxins (very helpful) and can also help stop diarrhea.

If the odor becomes especially foul, I'd strongly suggest getting tested for C. Diff.

I'd also suggest consulting your doctor if this continues much longer...

Oh, I see. Salt & Vit. C.

You are in good hands with Razzle's advice. This area (s & c) is not my fort, although, carob root powder, and coconut oil can also be helpful to manage garden variety loose stools.

Still, it is always good to talk with your doctor if you experience diarrhea fromn antibiotic use.

Hi Razzle,

Thank you for your advice.

Yes, I take 100 billion cfu's twice daily.

I will keep an eye/nose out for peculiar stink.

Where can I buy charcoal tablets?

I looked c diff up on wiki but it wasn't very helpful, ie, from a lyme perspective.

Some of the symptoms are my normal lyme ones.

It did mention abdominal pain, of which I have none. And nausea either, thank goodness.

Hi Keebler,

I have coconut oil and carob powder here.

Do I make a paste with them and eat it?

Also, it's carob powder from the bulk section-is it the same as carob root?

Thanks

I think even regular drug stores may have charcoal tablets. I've seen them at some health food stores, and probably could find some online at places like vitacost.com or supersup.com

Oh, and another option is eating coconut fiber - the "meat" of the coconut. Coconut fiber is excellent for diarrhea and also helps expel parasites.

Yes, carob powder from the bulk section is carob root powder.

Razzle is correct, the coconut fiber would be better but since you have coconut oil on hand, the fiber from the carob powder will mix nicely with that. Add a tiny bit of stevia for sweetness (and maybe a dash of cinnamon for flavor and for its antibacterial effect).

If you have coconut fiber ("flour" or shredded), add that in.

Mix as a paste and Enjoy with a tiny spoon, as a treat.

Still, talk to your doctor to be sure all aspects of this are considered.

Watery diarrhea is the classic sign of C.diff.

I never got abdominal pain or foul smelling stools.

It has nothing to do with Lyme. Most of us have C.diff as a gut commensal. When abx knock back populations of good bacteria, it can take hold and thrive.

It is a dangerous infection. There are two different enterotoxins that cause the diarrhea. Both are bad. One can be fatal.

You should get this checked out. If you stop abx, it will go away. That's a good indication it's C.diff.

The treatment is Flagyl, so you won't get set back in Lyme treatment.

Cholestyramine binds the C.diff toxins, and can be used to keep it from becoming harmful. It has been a lifesaver for me.

I had diarrhea every day when I first started salt/c. According to the www.lymephotos.com info, it is from die off.

I was seeing parasites exit encased in biofilm that floated to the top. Are you observing any parasites in the toilet or anything that looks suspicous?

At any rate, you can stop the salt/c until this calms down, and then resume. I also suggest drinking coconut water that is high in potassium to balance electrolytes.

If you don't have the salt/c Plus book for guidance, you can order it from Amazon. Would be a good step by step guide for you. Also join lymestrategies salt/c group for more guidance. Hope this helps.

P. S. I also took antiparasitic herbs such as Parastroy and drank Kefir and took coconut oil.

Thanks all for the responses [Smile]

I have coconut flour-so I will use that as well.

Tomorrow I will hunt down charcoal tablets-they seem like something I should keep on hand regardless.

Just to be on the safe side, I'll call my doc tomorrow and explain what's going on. I am so glad to hear that flagyl is the treatment! I desperately don't want to stop my lyme treatment.

I haven't noticed any biofilm on the surface, but that is something I will watch for. I don't want to dial the S&C back too much-I will go back down to 1/2 tsp of each and see if the diarrhea goes away. The bottle says 1/4 tsp is 1200 mg of Vit C.

I don't have coconut water on hand but I do have an avocado-I think that has a fair amount of potassium.

Thanks all for your advice and tips. I very much appreciate it.

[Smile]

You say that you will "go back down to 1/2 tsp of salt and Vit. C" (end quote)

That's a pretty high dose of each, anyway (depending on when you began). How much were you doing? In divided doses, not all at the same time, I hope? Often, better sipped slowly thoughout the day.

When did you start?

It is SEA salt, right?

Biofilm is not likely going to be seen by the naked eye, it a mostly clear coating that some bacteria, viruses, etc. "cloak" themselves with. And addressing biofilm is just an on-going moderate process all through treatment.

Some do say they see parasites that have exited into the toilet with this approach, though many parasites are too small to see (and I sure would not want to scout them out!).

Yes, I make the S&C in a liter of water with lyme and stevia and sip it throughout the day.

Yes, unadulterated sea salt. Sometime when I measure it, I wonder how much is sand and how much is salt, because it looks like bits of sand in it. [Smile]

My normal C dose prior to starting S&C was anywhere from 1000-2000 mg per day.

But you might be right. Going to 1/4 tsp of each would be a quick way to see if the S&C is the cause of the runs.

A good sea salt HAS color. It is not sand but salt with some color from the natural minerals.

You might stop S & C until this is settled down, then start back at 1/8 teaspoon (by a cooking measuring spoon, not a spoon used for eating).

Greta,

Adding high dose of Florastor helped get my gut under better control. I take both VSL#3 DS and Florastor daily.

I also limit my Vit C to 1000mg/day. Next time you need salt check out pink himilayan sea salt from saltworks.com. buy it in bulk size.

Hi Gmb,

Thank you for the tip on the saltworks.

My llnd recommended a few things this morning, as well as the Florastor.

I will be starting it as soon as I buy it.

Thanks [Smile]

Greta,

Florastor is pricey, you might want to shop around and get a small bottle locally, and order larger bottle online. I buy from pureformulars.com for around $35 per 50 capsule bottle w/ free shipping. Start at 2 caps twice a day.

get well

Brewer's Yeast (really "nutritional" yeast, the yellow flakey stuff) is an excellent source for some probiotics.

Miso soup, too.

Diarrhea is gone. Thank goodness.

But so are my abx, which is scary.

High dose Tindi, Florastor and probiotics for the next 7 days...but no abx. I am petrified that I will be backsliding back to where I was pre-abx.

The only thing I can think of doing is making sure I sleep a couple of hours extra each day until I can go back on the abx. Try to give my body some support to fight the spirochetes when the Tindi breaks their cysts.

Greta,

I forgot to say be careful with nutritional yeast: not too late in the day as it can be a bit stimulating and could cause insomnia.

And start with food. Some of the B-vitamins can upset an empty stomach. Once you are used to it, you may be able to have some a glass of water, with sea salt as a pick-me-up. But when you start that, do just a little bit and see how it goes.

It's great with lots of different kinds of foods, too. With hot foods, add just before serving. You don't want it to cook.

I think the Tindimax will cover you just fine without antibiotics for a week, with the support methods.

You say you are " petrified" about that - well, THAT's no fun. As much as possible, take that "petrified" and transform it just to taking care of yourself as best you can -- and learn to say with a good roll of the eyes "Oy, Vey!"

Just do the best you can and ride the waves. Can't do that if you are petrified, eh? Don't become the board, RIDE the board. It's more fun.

Tindamax worked against spiros and cysts in vitro. This is not a bad single med to be taking.

You won't backslide in seven days.

It works against C.diff. Same class as Flagyl. That's good. It's always good to keep that one in check.

Not taking nystatine during abc therapy for more than 2 weeks is a high risk of getting yeast overgrow in the gut. Just probiotic do not prevent this I.m.o.
Nystatine is not resorbed but stays in the gut.

Detox and die off also can cause gut problems like diarrhoas and bloating.

Theralc is one of the best probiotics on the market. Acidophilus pearls are also very good. VSL is very concentrated but not stomach acid resistant. Some ingredients may not be tolerated very well (own experiences) if sensitive to milk products.

I am off to a walk in clinic today and I will ask about the nystatin and getting tested for c. diff.

Also, good idea about the mag, I'll skip it for a few days and see if everything returns to normal.

Thanks, all, for the tips [Smile]
