My 11 year old son started doxycycline yesterday after test results came back positive. Woke up with stabbing pain in chest (left breast). How can I tell difference between periocarditis/carditis from the lyme and stomach/esophagus issue from the doxy?

No on both counts, but will do so. Took him to ER for workup. All seems ok. Can't wait for that bill. Do you know when he is supposed to take probiotics - before or after doxy or both?

Either one is OK.. before or after. I take my probiotics first thing in the morning and last thing at night. (but I'm not on abx)
It would be good to do that and then another time in mid-afternoon.
Be sure he eats the full meal from now on ..AND.. do not let him lie down for 30-60 min after taking the doxy.
(and take the doxy in the middle of the meal)

Second Lymetoo's taking Doxy in the middle of a meal and do not lie down for an hour. Doxycycline can cause a terrible reflux that can burn and scar the esohpagus, that will happen if you lie down too soon.
Unfortunately, your son experienced what it feels like. So sorry, it must have scared you both.
Some find that taking Zantac can help with stomach discomfort. I chew Pepcid complete.

My adult daughter had major heart issues while on doxy.. everyone told her it was a herx and to ride it out. Her cardiologist who had lyme himself said the doxy was responsible and took her off. Please do a search on doxy and heart issues. Its not always a herx.
