Has anyone here decided NOT to take antibiotics during pregnancy?

I know the research on the odds of passing Lyme and that they go significantly down while on two pregnancy safe antibiotics.

However it just doesn't sit well with me. I can't imagine wiping out a baby's immune system like that. What chance does that give him/her to fight off any infection in life, including Lyme? I live in a region with one of the highest rates of Lyme.

I'm starting to explore herbs during pregnancy and looking into which herbs Dr. Buhner recommends during pregnancy.

Its such a difficult decision.

What are other's thoughts/experience?

Dr. J, LL pediatrician in CT, has put together a protocol for pregnant women with Lyme which can be followed with your own doctor. Many women have gone on to have healthy babies.

PM sent with his contact info.

One of the important things to take while on antibiotics is a good PROBIOTIC. Probiotics should be taken either 2 hours before or after you take abx, so as not to negate their effect.

I would recommend Theralac (see www.theralac.com).

Well, I had no idea I had chronic Lyme or Bart while pregnant with my last 2.

Where are you in terms of treatment? Completely symptom free, off antibiotics now?

I believe Dr. J states while infected, 50% chance passing in utero, and, goes up while breastfeeding untreated- it CAN be passed breastfeeding.

My last child I did not breastfeed for personal reasons - she is 100% healthy and neurotypical (I still had no treatment)

The one before, is not. Knowing what I know now, I would not risk it. I'm sorry- you're asking-but the sick child really, really suffers. Then, all the vaccines on top of disabled immune system.

Take lots of probiotics.

You can also get the cord blood tested and sent to Igenex.
But, still there is the breast feeding after. I know people have strong opinions on this- I get flack. But it is REAL.

Lyme positive PCR blood, and
positive Bartonella henselae Igenex, 2011.
low positive Fry biofilm test, 2012.
Update 7/16- After extensive treatments,
doing okay!

I'm so sorry to hear that one of your children suffers. It helps to hear your experience.

I always assumed I would be on two antibiotics while pregnant. My LLMD has made it very clear that this is her recommendation. But now that the time is near, my husband & I have started to discuss how uncomfortable we are with the idea.

Sounds like probiotics are the answer and it's just not worth the risk to not be on antibiotics.

I'm not completely symptom free yet but have made drastic improvement. I'm slowly being weaned off my antibiotics to herbs now. I have a feeling my LLMD will want me to get a little further along in treatment before trying.

I'm in my late thirties and have no children, so I'm getting a bit anxious about time.

I understand, I do. Ack, the decisions.

I had my last 2 later in life- what a blessing- ALL of my kids, don't know where I would be without them.

It will go wonderful, I'm sure, you are so ahead of the game with all your knowledge- ENJOY :-)

Sorry, just wanted to add one thing: I have been studying herbs a lot the last month,

and there are quite a few that say don't take while pregnant.

I dunno... I would think just taking Amoxicillin while pregnant/ BF'ding who be safe, and keep it all tucked away in cyst form.

That's probably what I would do (although I wouldn't BF again, don't bash me!)

There, enough out of me.
