I've read that aerobic exercise is bad for Lyme patients. Why is this so?

Is it because aerobic exercise lowers the oxygen level in the blood, creating an environment in which these bad bacteria thrive?

Is it because aerobic exercise weakens the immune system?

Cardio affects the adrenal glands. Lyme is already hard on the adrenal system.

Burrascano explains it on page 31-32.

When I was acutely ill, exercise made things so much worse.

Now that I'm further along in treatment, I can tolerate more. I just came in from a 3 mile bike ride (including some small hills) and I welcome the exertion. I had to build up to it by walking first. It feels great to feel my body getting stronger.

When the adrenal system (HPA axis, et.al.) are depleted, aerobics - or ANY stress can be very danagerous, even to the point of being life-threatening.

In addition to good replies above,

Aerobics push the liver & kidneys, in general, it's how it all works. A healthy liver and set of kidneys can manage just fine under this "arrangment" with the body.

The liver & kidneys can all be overwhelmed with the toxic load from lyme (and from treatment, too). When they can't be pushed any further (as with lyme), some serious damage can occur from toxicity that has no way out. Organ damage can result.

The brain is often swollen with lyme. Aerboics can really jostle and stress the brain in dangerous ways, too.

Lyme can damage the heart. Aerobic exercise during infection, in general, can damage the heart.

Every system, every organ can be affected (swollen, dysfunctional, at its "breaking point") due to many kinds of infection. It's no time to do anything that requires more of such organs & systems, it's time to nurture & nourish.

See the Nightingale post here about regarding viruses and heart damage during aerobics - and other considerations, too.

Movement need not be fast and furious.

For some, massage and some passive resistence muscle excercises powered by the therapist is all they can do (sometime for a long time). If so, it's vital to pay attention to that.

Deep breathing is also really good - does same thing for colon as aerobic exercise.

I thought aerobic exercise increases not decreases the level of oxygen in the blood.

Cardio drops the immune system for days before it brings it back up. Weight lifting on the other hand only drops the immune system for one day before it brings it back up.

That is why Burrascano suggests weight lifting one day a week to start with and then you build up from there.

And in 2008 guidelines, he mentions that the purpose of the weights is to increase T cells, no?

He has also said he thinks Lyme hides out under the skin, weight lifting type exercise brings it out

(I am paraphrasing badly). Weight lifting has been huge for me- I feel stronger, and no longer worried about muscle wasting.

I recently bought a foam roller (mine has little nodules on it, some are just smooth)

I LOVE it- releases all kinds of muscle tension, increases circulation.

And walking outside- wonderfully mentally to be outside, and increase circulation.

I cannot do any kind of high aerobic- nope.
