I took my pill this morning (doxy) and it was so hard to get down. Drank water and it felt like I had already drank so much water that it wouldn't go down.

then it felt like a small burst in my esophagus and right after that I started getting gerd and indigestion.

Now my chest feels like it is burning sort of. and I feel like there is something stuck in there- even now after I ate a little

I am wondering if this could be connected to the medicine some how???

It sounds like a pill got stuck in your throat and then dissolved and burst open in your throat. I have had this happen with a vitamin capsule. It was like you described.

Drink water for a good while, just small sips.

If a doxy capsule breaks open in your throat, it can really burn the throat. So, the water is intended to wash off your throat.

The gerd and indigestion should go away eventually.

Don't lay down. It will just make it worse.

TF, no it was immediate. Like it was going down and got stuck. I just remembered I have a hiatal hernia.... maybe that is it. I haven't had symptoms in yrs.

I also have H pylori as per EGD I had done cuople yrs ago.

I just took antacid to see if it helps. I keep burning and burping, yuck

yes, ok, I will drink more water.... if it did burst I see how this might feel that way. I think I may have held it in my mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it as I was pouring water in my glass....

but I have eaten an egg - wouldn't that have helped ?

well the pain has not gone away and the heartburn is bad. Plus I now have pain in my back that comes in flashes- right in the center of my back which is the oposite place of where this feeling is in the front of me.

What the heck?

If you can do dairy, then maybe try a glass of milk.

You aren't supposed to do dairy with doxy.. but you MUST take it in the MIDDLE of a full meal or you will PAY.

I hope it gets better so you can continue to take it.

Yes, definately in the middle of a full, dairy free meal.

Don't take it at the end...then if it gets stuck, you may do what I did-gag until the pill and the meal came back up. Haha.

A trick I learned from my vet... Is to rub a little oil on the outside of capsules if they seem particularily sticky.

Can't do this with all meds, as some have to be taken on an empty stomach, and can't do if one has proto, but for doxy capsules it should be OK.

Here are just 2 articles about how badly doxy can burn the throat if it gets stuck in the throat:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2033383/How-pill-water-burn-hole-throat-One-doctor-learns-hard-way-gulp-tablets.html

http://www.casesjournal.com/content/1/1/144

As these articles say, since there are no pain nerves in the lower throat, the pain may be experienced as pain in your back or some other symptom.

It may be time to call the doctor and tell him what happened.

This is why doxy must be taken in the middle of a full meal. First eat half the meal, then take the pill, then eat the other half of the meal. And, always take the pill with lots of water.

You say you took an antacid. That can totally negate the antibiotic nature of doxy, or partially. Antacids often contain calcium & magnesium or other minerals that can block certain antibotics.

You also must remain upright for a full hour after taking doxy, or at least your torso must, mostly anyway. A tall backed chair and ottoman can be very helpful.

I agree with TF: "It may be time to call the doctor and tell him what happened." And the history of your esophagus diagnosis, since you say that you "just remembered I have a hiatal hernia"

If you have a burn now, you may need to stop this Rx for a while so do call your doctor.

Hope you feel better soon. There are always some blips on the screen to work through.

my doxy directions says to take without food. It says food stops it from being effective.

I usually don't eat until 1 hour after I take it in the AM, and then I take the second pill later after not eating for 2 hours.

The directions say that, but every single lyme doctor knows that if you take doxy on an empty stomach, it won't be long before you suffer--reflux, heatburn, etc. and you will not be able to continue the med.

So, we are telling you how the lyme doctors tell patients to take doxy.

It is how my well-known lyme doctor told me to take it. I got sick when I started out taking it on an empty stomach, following the pharmacy directions. He said, "No, no, no."

just called dr and they are closed. So I paged him. I hope he answers- I am not feeling great from this and now I am upset from what everyone is saying makes sense. I suspected pills getting stuck and I know that can be bad- I just didn't want to give up!

and my directions explicitly say NOT WITH FOOD- and I even checked on line and it says not with food if at all possible as it lessons the effect.

So , Ok I will see what he says.

all this, and my poor old doggy is dying... I am a mess

Take it WITH FOOD, no matter what they say. Those instructions are for those taking doxy short term. Lyme also usually causes all kinds of irritation to the whole GI tract. For this reason, those with lyme need more protection, from the mouth, all the way down. Food can make the difference in whether it can be tolerated or not.

Some foods do affect its effectiveness. I think they think patients are just too stupid to figure out what foods are okay and what aren't so they just cut them all out. Big Mistake.

Just do not take with DAIRY or foods / anything else that is really high in calcium, magnesium, minerals (or with supplements). Vegetables are fine, of course (even if they contain minerals, it's not the same as with diary products).

Keep torso nearly upright for an hour afterward. (Leaning back a little in a high backed chair is okay, just not too far back.)

All this is what most LLMDs advise. You might call the office manager for yours now, to be sure as what you describe happening is something they should know.

Yes I had to take it with food too, if I didn't it caused severe heartburn. [Frown] taking it with food, I did not have that problem.

I called my dr (not LLMd, but lyme friendly). And the office lady called and NOT the dr!

That bothered me becasue I didn't have a chance to talk to the dr! I don't think they even know that I have a hernia. and I tried to mention that to the woman and she didn't know what to say.

The message from the dr was to stop the doxy because I am having too many reactions, see how I feel next week, then if lyme symptoms return I need to let them know and they he will start me on Ceftin.

Well, my lyme stymptoms have not gone away so yes, they will "return". UGH.

Anybody know what Ceftin is like? I am allergic to penicillin- so I hope that is something I can take.

I am a little nervous to not be on anything til I see LLMD in Oct.

Plus I am a little worried that damage is done to my esophagus or something too.....

You might be able to. If your pain is too bad, don't do it.

Very sorry to hear about your dog!

I was reading over severe reactions to doxy and it says : pain in throat or trouble swallowing, stomach cramps/pain .

so, since I have a history of drug allergies and sensativities and these reactions were pretty intense I think it best not to take this any more. I WAS taking it with tons of water and I knew not to recline after. Would taking it with food have prevented this? maybe

I think I may have some stricture now or something and I should probably go to a gastro person.

and I can already feel more spaced oout since missing my dose last night.

I am a little concerened with what this has done to me and I hope it is repairable on its own.

now what am I going to do? The abx made me feel so much better. I am really sad today
