Merial has just launched the UK's first dog Lyme vaccine, called Merilym.
It's based on OspA, even though an OspA vaccine caused extreme harm to humans in the US, and even though it has been known for years that OspA is one of the most genetically variable molecules in Lyme species in Europe (therefore very poor candidate for vaccine).
The vaccine is not recommended for any dog that may already have Borreliosis - but dog owners in Britain are hardly likely to know that, as our test methods are so hopeless. Though having said that, it is true that a dog in Britian has a better chance of correct diagnosis and treatment than a human.
It's interesting that Merial chooses to launch this shortly after CDC admit their figure under-estimates the true HUMAN Lyme incidence by a factor of ten (and if that's what they admit to, imagine what they do NOT admit to!).
Meanwhile Porton Down biowarfare lab continues to insist that Lyme is rare here.
If you hate your dog, please try this vaccine. Alternatively contact the RSPCA, who might relocate him to a more loving home.
