Does anyone know if a diagnosis of MDS can be related to lyme disease?? Anyone with MDS or family member who has it?

- If this is what MDS refers to, IMO, it could be connected with Babesia (anemia and enlarged spleen are hallmarks of this disorder -- as with babesia).
The mitochondrial dysfunction could be caused by lyme &/or other TBD.
Excerpt: "Some authors have proposed that the loss of mitochondrial function over time leads to the accumulation of DNA mutations in hematopoietic stem cells . . . ." (end excerpt).
And lyme can cause alterations in DNA
Seems there could be many causes / influences. A good ILADS educated doctor will likely be able to discuss this with you.
If you (or whomever) is to go for further testin - or a second opinion, a LLMD would be best to guide you to the most appropriate specialist who may know more than the average doctor about possible TBD influences.

- I also wonder if regular use of acetaminophen might influence the mitochondrial damage over time. Acetaminophen blocks glutathione in the liver but also in ALL cells of the body - and that, in turns, keeps in the toxins and oxidants (free radicals) which can cause cellular damage.
It's an ingredient in many Rx and over the counter products and even tiny doses can add up to damage. -

Thanks Keebler, The doctors said that my mom has months to live rather than years. She has been given Procrit which has major warnings and one of them is cardiovascular which my mom takes drugs for (Atrial Fibrillation/high blood pressure. Can't figure out why the doctors would want to give this to her. They said that she could suddenly collapse at anytime. This isn't the path that I would go but what my mom has chosen for herself. She looks fine to talk to her. Hospice has been notified to be ready to step in when needed.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother. Does she have the MDS which is the blood cell disorder of the bone marrow? Gosh; just awful.
In terms of whether or not Lyme can cause something like this...well, my Mom had a friend who spent countless hours outdoors as a big time naturalist/gardener/enthusiast. This otherwise healthy friend suddenly developed a 'syndrome'-which I believe was classified as a MDS-like disorder. So much so, that I know that at one point in time, she did receive a form of chemo/radiation for her condition. My mother always suspected undiagnosed Lyme/tbd's gone haywire, but, I don't believe that any credible Lyme/tbd testing was ever done.
Knowing that Lyme can mimic and or morph into virtually any other condition, I certainly wouldn't recommend that you rule out Lyme or another type of tbd in your mom. There is simply still too many unknowns with these diseases to know one way or the other.
Thoughts are with you and your mother during this difficult time.
