I've been relatively OK for a while now, other than right hip and lower back pain...sometimes announcing itself with electric shock-like sensations across the lower back
i noticed in November that a new symptom had announced itself, the left knee and the area surrounding area was achy and painful and made me hobble - my trainer thought that our exercise routine was moving the area i thought the pain emanated from to the real area it was being generated from....
when the pain was bad i took a tramadol or an ibuprofen - i was also taking a multivitamin, garlic and curcumin and vit D & magnesium citrate and fiber supps
about 15 days ago I felt very strange, not dizzy or lightheaded but enervated...my trainer thought it was low blood sugar because i was at the gym when it came on...
next day i woke in a drenching sweat and a stuffy nose, sore throat and head and neck ache and cough...i thought well that's weird, i have a cold, it's been a while but something is going around the office, so i got it
about 10 days ago i couldn't take it anymore and couldn't get an appt with the GP so found some 4 year old doxy in my cabinet and said let me try it...
well i'm not sure if this upper leg, right hip, lower back ache, pain really started a bit before my first dose (i suspect yes, if i remember right it was a very bad Thursday night that spurred me to find an abx)...but the pain is now indescribable - i feel like my whole pelvic area is just going to stop working...that everything is tightening up and getting hard and i'm not going to be able to get out of bed or walk...
to complicate matters, the ENT yesterday gave me Augmentin to take to try to get rid of this congestion, head ache, ear aches, cough...he did do a throat culture and we're waiting on the results...
What little i know of taking abx when one has been sick with Lyme is that the doxy might be sending the bugs into cyst form so i started taking some flagyll too...
anyway, this has been a long post...i'm taking probiotics away from the abx...i've had to take a tramadol because the pain has been excruciating, but my real concern is that these neurological symptoms are just getting worse...
when i'm off the abx for the congestion, cough etc is there anything i can do for the feeling that my body is going into paralysis?
i have a call into the only LLMD i know of in NYC to set up an appt...my GP wants me to see an Infectious Disease guy - but I'm wary of that...and i'm considering going back to visit Dr. Z in NYC for the herbal remedy, but oh so don't want to smell like garlic again....any advice appreciated....

You need to stop the Doxy. The tetracyclines become nephrotoxic after one year.
You may want to get your kidneys checked.
Yes, it sounds like you are relapsing. Bummer. Make those appts!

Can you provide some source for that information about tetracyclines becoming nephrotoxic after one year? I have not heard of that before.

But... it appears that doxy is OK past expiration. The pharmacy automatically puts a 1 year expiration date on all meds when Rx issued. This I believe is just standard practice, and does not reflect the manufacturers recommended date on the bulk shipment which may be several years longer.
"Do not use after expiration date. Degraded, expired tetracyclines are highly nephrotoxic. "
Thanks for the message Boxer Mom, i had bad back and hip pain before i started the doxy but it does seem to be getting worse exponentially, so i think you may be right....and i also think i may be relapsing with different and more intense symptoms/pain...

From the contraindications and warnings for Doxycycline:
Fanconi-like syndrome may occur with outdated tetracyclines
I'm sure gmb is exactly right. It's not like the bottle goes "poof" on the exact expiration date. But it is high risk to assume expired tetracyclines are still safe.

Well, today i saw the buddy my GP referred me to...it didn't start out well...the questions he was asking made me sure he was in the IDSA camp...when he told me he wanted to send my blood to Quest or Labcorp to see if I had Lyme after i had told him i had a positive Igenex result 10 years ago after 30 years of negative results from Quest...I lost it...
I said I'm sorry, this is not going to work...i've explained to you i had these same symptoms 10 years ago and i took multiple oral abx for years to get to the point where i was 6 months ago....i'm not interested in blood work that might tell me if i have a current infection...
he said Igenex's results are not scientific - I said it was scientific if the course of treatment resulting from that positive test got me well again...
i then said "i feel sorry for your patients who never get well because you rely on negative lab results from quest or labcorp because you insist on what you think is "scientific"
and i got dressed and left....i have made an apptment with DR R here in Manhattan but that won't be until March...so I hope i can walk in March...this pain is just getting worse daily...
