Hi there,
My wife was put on amoxicillin and clarithromycin because she is pregnant with lyme.
She is having a very bad time with the nausea and stomach pains/constant diarrhea that these are causing.
Are there any suggestions to help with this?
Thank you!

Hello there Jets Fan!

Is she taking probiotics?

Probiotics are so important to take while on antibiotics. They need to be taken at least two hours away from antibiotics.

Did your LL confirm which brands are OK to take during pregnancy and how much to take? A quick phone call or fax to the office should clear that up [Smile]

Florastor is a good one for the runs, but not sure if it can be used during pregnancy.

Eating Kefir, unsweetened, whole milk kefir, at least one cup, before bed each nicht should help to repopulate her gut with good bacteria and good yeast.

Whole milk, artisan yogurts will help to soothe her tummy.

There are Ginger Chews at my health food store. Super handy for nausea. I'm not sure if ginger is OK when one is pregnant though. Probably is, but please check to be sure.

if the runs go on longer than 3 days please phone your LL.

Best wishes [Smile]

In addition to the Ginger Chews that Greta mentions, GINGER CAPSULES can help with the nausea and it is often used in pregnancy just for this purpose. Her LLMD should be called, though, so they know what's going on and have a chance to make suggestions.

If there is an ILADS educated LL ND (naturopathic doctor) near you, they would have far more ideas and, if trained in acupuncture, that could also be of help.

some abx can be taken as intramuscular injections. You could circumvent the digestive tract altogether

She could switch Clarithromycin to Azithromycin.

Clarithromycin (Biaxin) is notorious for causing GI problems.

Amoxicillin with Azithromycin (Zithromax) is a very common pregnancy combo.

According to my LLMD and the famous Dr. J, the best pregnancy protocols are:

-Zith + Amoxy
or
-Zith + Bicillin
or
-Zith + Omnicef

Biaxin is not recommended for Pregnancy. See Dr B's guidlines.

My wife was on Zith + Omnicef. Baby is now 14 months old an very happy and healthy!

Magnesium can also be used during pregnancy and can help a lot to decrease a herx.

Topic: MAGNESIUM LINKS sets

A LL ND would be able to guide as to which liver support would be best at this time. With azithromycin, the ears can be affected so liver support is extremely important to help protect ears with zith.

LIVER & KIDNEY SUPPORT & and several HERXHEIMER support links, too.

"How to find a LL ND" links here, too.

Thanks for the help everyone, I will try the switch from clarithromycin to azithromycin, and try the other hints.
Thanks again
