I knew the day was coming but I am terrified of this drug! What are your experiences? Is it ok to start super slow? I am supposed to be on it for 3 weeks.
I make it through rifampin which I was scared to take as well. I think I stared at the bottle for a few weeks before diving in.
I think the permanent csn damage has me worried the most!

This was the best of all the drugs I had to take for helping me. I didnot have any side effects.

Ok, here's what happened with me and what to watch out closely for.
After the 2nd infusion of IV Flagyl, I felt pins and needles in the bottom of both feet. I should have stopped, but when I told my LLMD and nurse about it, they said go on. Well, at the end of my 7th infusion, I had pins and nedles (Neuropathy up to my knees and finger tips and up my arms. Also felt like I was being stuck with pins all over the truck of my body.
It was very painful for a few months and after 4 months it was almost gone and now it has totally gone away.
I would have to say that if you feel any Neuropathy to stop and ask your dr. and reevaluate your dose at least. My experience scared me to death and ruined my summer, but I am very lucky it resolved.

I have taken Rifampoin twice and currently on for the past 11 months and have had zero side effects. It has been one of the easiest meds for me.

I loved Flagyl the first time I took it for a month. It made me feel very happy...almost euphoric.
But when I pulsed it for two weeks every two weeks every time on the 4th day I became very depressed and it lasted for the remainder of the pulse. Once I understood it was the drug, I was able to deal with the depression better.
for me too, the worst thing was thing was not being able to have a glass of wine with dinner.
we're all different, I couldn't do rifampin, even a tiny dose. I lasted 4 days. I was so wired, and weak at the same time.

Flagyl has helped me just as much as any other abx. Definitely start slow. The first time I ever took it I didn't start slow and I had one of the nastiest frontal headaches I've ever had. Was brutal.
Also - it will cause herxing... I use ginger tea to relieve the herx. Works everytime.

Thanks everyone! I worked up to 450mg of Rifampin for 6 months. It was the one that knocked out my body/bone pain! Anything over that amount made me have terrible insomnia. I herx on it so I went very very slow. My rashes came back and I had a fever for 24 hours. It was strange! Now that I'm off of it I hope the Bart doesn't come back.
I need to get ginger tea!

FYI, my LLMD told me about a drug called Alinia, that's like Flagyl, but without the toxic side affects.
Maybe inquire about that?

Tindamax (tinidazole) is another drug that's like Flagyl but seems better tolerated...
Anyway, I've been on Flagyl for a long time and it is the best med for me...I feel horrible when off it just a few days.
To avoid the peripheral neuropathy side-effect, make sure you are taking B Complex vitamins.

Why not take Tinadazole? It works the same way and is usually better tolerated.

Start with a small amount... When I started Flagyl, I started with 1/4 tablet...and only increased by 1/4 tablet after a few weeks (once herxing & symptoms stabilized).

I took it twice for 4 months at a time. Like most ABX, it has no herx effect on me.
I did feel better after the 4th month, slight more energy, but by then the LLMD's take it away.

Keep your magnesium intake HIGH while you are on Flagyl. It may protect your nerves and prevent neuropathy, etc.
Just be aware.

Timidizole did not have the same effects as Flagyl in my case. Flagyl hit BLO for me and probably other mess in my gut.

It took me several months to build up to oral flagyl 3 x/day. I started with 1/2 a pill/week. After 15 months on oral, I started IV Flagyl 2x/day. Go slow & listen to your body and back off when herxing is bad. Good luck!

I've never felt anything on flagyl. Started taking 3x/day right out of the gate, and they could have been sugar pills for as much as they affected me.
