Google it...

Pitted fruits...

Listeria...

Whoa.

When making my Amish Peach Pie, I soaked the peach slices in good old LEMON JUICE. So far, so good.

Time to lighten this up:

Knock knock!
Who’s there?
Olive.
Olive who?
Olive you!

Shipped before June 12 -- these fruits would have been eaten LONG before today.

specifics for today's news on this:

FDA - Listeria, Fruit Recall

http://www.wawonapacking.com/

Wawana Packing Press Release

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/possible-listeria-contamination-spurs-recall-of-summer-fruits/

By Jessica Firger - CBS News - July 22, 2014, 12:23 PM

Possible listeria contamination spurs recall of summer fruits

A produce packing company in Cutler, Calif., has issued a voluntary recall of a variety of summer produce which may be contaminated with harmful listeria bacteria.

Wawona Packing Company recalled orders of both organic and conventionally sold whole peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots on Saturday.

The company distributes their products to Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club, Trader Joe's, Stop & Shop, Whole Foods, Costco and a number of other large food retailers.

As a result of the recall, Wegman's, a supermarket chain with locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Massachusetts, recalled a number of baked goods prepared in the store that contained the possibly contaminated fruits.

There have been no reports of illness associated with consuming the fruit, which was packed and shipped packed between June 1-12. . . . (cont'd at link above).

-- Hold on, though: Those dates are NOT the same as on the FDA's website.

--- Also the store website for where you have done your shopping if it included these items.

Randibear, I just added to a post above. This recall is about fruit that was shipped 6 & 7 weeks ago. I can't imagine any would still be around.

I'd check the website for where you got the items but your state does not look like it was included.

Oh, but the CBS News article had the dates wrong, they said June 1 - 12:

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm405943.htm

. . . packed between June 1, 2014 through July 12,2014 . . . .

It's really hard to search some particulars at the FDA and the shipper's site. And, really, who saves those tiny little stickers on a piece of fruit . . . they have the code. If you have fruit, you can search by the code . . . with a big magnifying glass. Codes are at the shipper's website.

Usually, washing any produce really well helps but sometimes, the microbe can be in the water supply and get inside a fruit. That happened last year with some melons that were recalled.

They don't know yet but it seems the sample size was very small and no one has reported illness.

Be sure to never cut into a fruit, onion, anything, unless it's been washed well with special attention with a fine brush to the navel or stem "funnel"

I use my hand dish washing soap, as it's citrus & coconut based and no petroleum ingredients or phosphates, etc. Or Nutribiotic GSE drops.

Any salads or veggies cut in "ready to eat" containers also need good washing just prior to eating, even if it says it's been triple washed.

Avoid buying a half a melon unless you know the store's policy on how they prepare that by scrubbing well first before cutting into it (IF even done in their kitchen on site, which it's probably not). The plastic wrapping is not all the secure, either.

Fortunately, my dad taught us all this as early as we knew what food was. It's just second nature. But, sometimes, I've been in a store and the clerk will just pull out a knife and cut into a piece of fruit right from the bin to offer samples if I ask about a new fruit or veggie. So much wrong with that.

You don't want to get listeriosis, especially with a weakened immune system. Bad tummy, real bad, and you feel really miserable and achy all over. Can be fatal too.

I got it eating fresh hummus years ago before the recall was announced- and it was the first and last time I ever ate hummus. However, there is a more recent recall (May 2014) with an article here saying...

7 tons of hummus recalled for possible listeria contamination

From a "Mayo" website:

If you develop a listeria infection, you may experience:
•Fever
•Muscle aches
•Nausea
•Diarrhea

Symptoms may begin a few days after you've eaten contaminated food,

but

it may take as long as two months before the first signs and symptoms of infection begin.

If the listeria infection spreads to your nervous system, signs and symptoms may include:
•Headache
•Stiff neck
•Confusion or changes in alertness
•Loss of balance
•Convulsions

Symptoms during pregnancy and for newborns

During pregnancy, a listeria infection is likely to cause only mild signs and symptoms in the mother. The consequences for the baby, however, may be devastating.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/listeria-infection/basics/symptoms/con-20031039

Most normal people spontaneously clear the infection and require no treatment.

In contrast, people with risk factors should be treated quickly with IV antibiotics.

http://www.onhealth.com/listeria/article.htm

Which abx?

http://www.hopkinsguides.com/hopkins/ub/view/Johns_Hopkins_ABX_Guide/540318/all/Listeria_Monocytogenes

The recall was initiated based on internal company testing. The company shut down the

implicated packing lines,
retrofitted equipment,
sanitized the facility
and retested.

Subsequent daily test results have been negative.

Pluots = hybrid of a plum and an apricot.

Hi TC! Headed north to cool off ;-) for a week.

Nothing from the outside will work if it's inside the fruit. If contamination comes from a water source, it will be inside the fruit.

They have not yet determined the source, nor were they specific as to if the sample was contaminated only on the skin or in the flesh of the fruit, or both.

I understand they are saying so far no cases but if it takes from 3 to 70 days before symptoms show up, then there may be some later.

Remember, though, to check YOUR store's main web site for detail. While this had a broad distribution, it's not for every store in every town. The sample size was very small. So far, no indication that all fruit was affected.

This summer is a good time to get to Farmers' Markets and get to know your local & regional food producers. At your local markets, look for the local produce.

Buying from those hard working farmer & ranchers (and whatever name those who tend orchards are called) close to home has many advantages.
