Found this interview with medical expert James Sloane on You Tube. (Sorry, I don't know how to copy & paste..Just type in the headline)I always thought that it was the acid that kills the pathogens and this absolutely confirms it for me. Our first line of defense in the stomach is HCL to kill any bacteria. Really worth listening to this interview.

Hello- I tried HCL for the first time about 3 months ago, after reading on a SCD blog that if you try it,
and feel a warming sensation in your belly afterward, your dose is too high.
I got the warming sensation twice after trying only 1 pill each time-so stopped trying it.
I don't have heartburn, but got dx'd with reflux recently after a endoscopy, and consequently prescribed Zantac to help heal it.
Sorry I didn't watch video, but wondering if I should try HCL again? Thanks for any opinion.

Surprise,
If you get a burning sensation after taking HCL then maybe you don't need extra HCL. It is imperative that you take it with enough food or it could really burn.
Did you?

Thank you G. I did take it w/ dinner. I'll watch the video, I'm out of digestive enzymes right now so maybe I can find a combo,
remember sixgoofy liking Thorne. Thanks again, still working on my intestinal health for sure.

Your welcome surprise. I find taking digestive enzymes to be very important. They help break down protein, biofilm, mycoplasma, kill parasites and really helped me with brain fog. I take Super Digestaway by Soloray and they have been invaluable.

I've been taking HCL for about 15 years. I take three tablets, 450mg on an empty stomach preferably 20 minutes before my meal and have never had burning. I was diagnosed with low stomach acid many years ago, so maybe that's why I don't have burning.
