I am under treatment for Lyme with a LLD taking anti-biotics and Stephen Buhner protocol.

I need guidance for my mom who is in her mid 70's. She just got IGenex test back.

Positive for Babesia. Primary care dr. wants her on 200 mg of doxy. He says she doesn't have Lyme so not to worry about low amount of Doxy turning it into cyst form. I don't know about that.

Her IGenex test results show:

IGM
31 ++
41+

IGG
30+
41++

She's dealing with abdominal issues and a stool sample shows high white blood count. Her gastro dr. has yet to get back to her.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I know she should probably see a LLD. Just don't know if there are enough positives in her results. No Lyme docs close to her so she can go wherever. I'm about ready to have us both go to Dr. H in NY.

Those results are positive for lyme. Only taking Doxy is not enough and will cause it to go into cyst form. For doxy at least 400 my a day in a divided dose. Need to address all three forms of borellia. Dr. H is a very good LLMD to go to, leave message that you want to be put on the waiting list.

Your mom should see a Lyme doctor. Doxy is not typically used for Babesia. It is a malarial-like illness and is typically treated with an anti-malarial (such as Mepron or Malarone) and an antibiotic (such as Biaxin or Zithromax).

Is she taking 200 mg of Doxy daily for Lyme? This is what most non-Lyme doctors prescribe. The treatment range for Lyme is 300-600 mg daily with 400 mg often prescribed.

In case your mom does not know, there are some important tips to know when taking Doxy. Do not have any dairy, magnesium, or iron within two hours of taking it or it will not be absorbed properly. If it makes her nauseous, tell her to eat something substantial and non-dairy before taking it. Sometimes it helps to take the it in the middle of a meal.

Avoid the sun. She can get a severe burn in minutes even when wearing sunscreen. When I took Doxy, my knuckles got severely burned from the sun shining through the car window when I was driving! Tell her not to lay down for at least an hour after taking it or she can ulcerate her esophagus. This is very painful. Drink a full glass of water with it for the same reason.

Whenever she takes any antibiotics, she should take high-quality acidophilus at least two hours away from the meds. This helps to prevent yeast overgrowth. The best kind to get are refrigerated and have a high-culture count. Most health-food stores carry this.

You may want to suggest taking the doxy (following Sammi's advice above) for a few weeks, then another western blot would likely be more definitive.

KH - Is doxy the only antibiotic that forces Lyme to cystic form, or does it react that way to other antibiotics? If so, we probably all had cysts long before our Lyme diagnoses.

How did you persuade your mom to get tested?

Has she tried a gluten-free diet?

I persuaded my mom (also mid-seventies) to try a gluten-free diet and take magnesium supplements.

She noted huge improvement in restless leg problems and joint pain, but she still is not willing to be tested for Lyme.
