Well this is freakin me out! Just got my bloodwork done;
ALT 264, AST 88 U/L. So thats way up! I already was a bit freaked out before i got my blood drawn because i could feel my liver a bit. Not painful, just aware of its "presence". Also more nausea.

This is after i seemingly found a good combo for babs. Azithromycin, Alchornea (works way better than sida or crypto for me) and Andrographis. I hoped the andro would actually protect my liver, but guess not.

Im also on rifampin, so thats not helping either. But i felt i was really making some progress with my babs.

Ive already cut back on my babs herbs and now i cant feel my liver anymore, so i think it is settling down a bit. I will increase NAC and continue with milk thistle for now.

Ive heard other people say that babs die off causes liver enzymes to rise, but what is still acceptable?
When will it go down if i continue with the herbs?

Could be part of babs but my bet is the abx.s might causing the increase in liver e.'s as well. That happened to me numerous times and I had to take a abx. break.

Ive never had this with rifampin or azithromycin before actually. It seems to be related to the alchornea, and i dont think that herb usually causes massive increase of liver enzymes?

So i had decided to stick with the treatment, only reducing the rifampin from 1200mg to 600mg/day. Even increased some of the babs herbs.

And my bloodwork from last week has improved!
AST dropped from 88 to 64.
ALT dropped from 264 to 170.

My kidneys are doing better than ever and i even had a large drop in ferritin: from 629 to 473. Almost within normal range again [Smile]

So i guess it is not always necessary to stop treatment with elevated enzymes! But i will still keep a close eye on it.

The herb celandine could be helpful. You did not say what you are taking for liver support. There are lots of herbs that can help - milk thistle would be the first choice.

Hubby used to have elevated bilirubin from time to time. His AST and ALT were almost always normal.

I remember using celandine once and his bilirubin dropped almost in half in 3 days from his ER visit to the next time he did weekly bloodwork.

Castor oil packs also may help. Hubby liked those.

Look for my notes from the Buhner conference for instructions on using celandine.

I have taken milk thistle 2caps/day, NAC 2x600mg and andrographis 16caps/day for liver support. Well, the andrographis is for babesia treatment also.

I still have some greater celandine laying around, perhaps i will try some of that again.
My bilirubin was never high though. Which is strange, because i do have some jaundice. The jaundice is not related to liver enzymes either.
