A friend has been taking mepron for about 3 weeks. After two weeks she started feeling sick after eating, and recently threw up.

I've taken the medicine before and had only a weird, temporary, yellowish discoloration of vision. No nausea, vomiting, sweats, anxiety, etc.

Anyone else had a problem like this, where it was OK for a week or two and then became a problem? Did you attribute it to being a herx or direct reaction to the medicine?

Yes!

Mepron and zith. The first while it just gave me a bad feeling in my guts, like I was hit in my solar plexus.

Then it was nausea to the point of gagging when trying to swallow food.

Then it was horrendous doubling over stomach cramps with subsequent diareha.

I kept at the mepron and zith for about 3 weeks and then had to quit because the cramping and diareha and gagging when eating was terrible!

Yes, I'm on Mepron.. been on it now for about two months. I also get that weird nauseated feeling and sometimes even sweat, which began a couple weeks after start of treatment. I'm still trying to figure out if it's a reaction to the med or a herx. I'm leaning toward the conclusion that it's a reaction to the medicine rather than a herx.

I think a herx would last longer than this condition lasts, which is prob about up to three hours after taking it, then the condition starts to get better. That's the reason I think it's just a reaction to the mepron.

BTW, other than that nauseas/sick feeling lasting aprox three hours after taking it, Mepron doesn't seem to do anything else for me. I haven't herxed like others here experience while taking it, and I don't feel any better.. sure wish I did.

Actually, I wish my LLMD would just take me off it already, b/c I don't feel it's benefiting me at all.

Am wondering if my doc has me on the Mepron to treat the Lyme infection, or to treat babs, I'm not clear on this. Does mepron treat Lyme, or is it mainly used only for babs?

Mepron treats babesia. I'm in the same boat. On it and having a heck of a time. No clue if it's the drug or the herx or both. All I know is that it is giving me severe depression, nausea, sweats, headaches and lack of appetite. It's become my new arch enemy 😳

Thanks for chipping in everyone!

tarkay, that sounds to me like a herx. The term 'herx' gets thrown around pretty loosely here, and is often used to mean "I felt really awful while taking <X>". I kind of groan when I hear someone say "I herxed for a whole year taking this stuff".

Bacteria have proteins attached that have nasty effects when they interact with us. Bart has a lot of neurotoxins, for example. These proteins are attached to the bacteria until it dies, so what makes us sick from bart is the regular die-off and release of those proteins.

Enter an antibiotic and the rapid die-off of lots of bacteria. Now you're overloaded with all the toxic proteins. That's the definition of a herx.

But you can't have a year-long rapid die-off of bacteria that only live a few days.

So, tarkay, the way I understand it, a herx would make you have the babs symptoms worse for a little while. You list depression, sweats, and headaches - classic babs symptoms. Sounds like a herx to me - hopefully you're over it soon.

Greta and bla, your reaction sounds more like what my friend is experiencing. It actually sounds to me more like a reaction to the medicine than a herx. But I'm just trying to learn from others because I've only got my own experience to work from.

Adding on to this old post

I've been on mepron 3 weeks. I've been vomiting the past few days. I'm almost afraid to take my next dose as I can't keep food down.

I'm supposed to stay on it 4 weeks, then I'm switching to some herbals. I've been on zith for 4 months now. I really want to get rid of this but the med is hitting me hard:

Nausea, headaches, insomnia, sweating.

If babiosis is a Protozoa, Is it correct to call these effects of treatment a herx? It seems herx has become a broad definition to describe any worsening of symptoms during treatment.

I'm curious if the effects are a herx and we are expanding our knowledge of what microbes cause these reactions, or if some other phenomenon is occurring that is similar.

Mepron builds up in the system over time. It just might not agree with your body. It makes some people very ill. Not everything is a herx.
