My doctor suspected Babesia so I just started Atovaquone (Mepron) and have had some issues with it, but I'm not sure what's normal and what's not. Mix of constipation and diarrhea, issues with bowel control and severe anal itching (I know, gross). Anything I can do to deal with it? Sometimes I feel like I have to go but nothing actually comes out, other times I feel like my body is just leaking the Mepron out of me... Idk what to do I'll have to stop taking it for now until my doctor gets back to me.

Hi Ryan,

I had to stop it because of the diarrhea too.

The cramping alone from the mepron was doubling me over. Sometimes I would cramp, but no diarrhea.

It was very painful and uncomfortable.

Also my wallet was cramping too...

Not a good med for me.

There may be info for you on this thread:

Mepron Blues

I would also make sure you are taking lots of probiotics and watching your diet so you don't get candida... sounds like you may already have it.

Itchy butt/anus is allergy for me, ugh... sorry you have that one.

I found malarone to be easier on the body.

If you need to skip it til you hear back from your doctor, don't worry, mepron builds/stays in your system (for better or worse).

Also try taking some Floristor to help with the diarrhea.

I'm already on probiotics, I skipped 1 dose of Mepron and no itchiness or diarrhea. But dry heaving after breakfast for some reason, may be herxing.

I'm starting to think its just the Babesia herx, 5 days off the Mepron and getting worse... Having chills, rigors and spams in the anal area along with headaches. Don't want the Babesia to become resistant so I'll probably start again tonight. Pain in the spleen area where the Babesia can affect you, now have constipation pretty bad.

Also bleeding in anal area but idk if thats from just itchiness or from possible ulcers caused by Babs.

Ryan,

For hubby dry heaves were one of his babesia symptoms.

Be sure and discuss the bleeding with your doc. Ulcers is not generally a babesia symptom. You may have h.pylori which would need specific targeted treatment.

It definitely sounds like you have babesia, but as others have mentioned malarone may be easier for you to tolerate than mepron.

The herb redroot (tincture) can help with spleen issues.

Thanks for advice all. Currently back on Mepron, I lot of twitching in that whole lower region/prostate area. Itching is less prevalent but still there.

Another question, how much am I at risk for getting something like Guillain-Barre syndrome? I just never know when I'm herxing or when it could be something more serious, especially with the mycoplasma I've been treating as well. But I guess I won't know until all co-infections are treated first.

So I saw my PCP and it looks like what I have is a hemorrhoid. This is obviously due to the constipation, but is the constipation from the Mepron or more likely the herxing/Babesia? If its herxing then I want to make sure I'm on it so I can eventually get over it, if its the Mepron then I need to stop.
