My LLND prescribed Malarone for my daughter Z 20 yrs old. She feels that her symptoms are Babesia! She started on 1/3 a dose every other day for 5 days then 1/2 tab for 3 days. Spiked a fever and ill feelings on day 4-6. Day 6 of 1/2 tab she had blood in her stool. My LLND didn't know why? Possibly herx. I stopped the drug and day 8 no blood , no fever and adominal pain is improved. Why can Malarone cause bleeding? Pharmacy literature states no cumadinblood thinners. She doesn't need Cumadin but takes Fish oil! Grateful for your knowledge❤️ D

I have absolutely no clue why this could have happened. So sorry!
I can say blood in the urine is not uncommon for those with babesia. I can say when the treatment is working the red blood cells are killed along with the inner parasite and are shed.
I wish I could give you a good solid answer, but that's all I've got.

Was it fresh red blood? Did you rule out hemorrhoid and anal tear/fissure? Anal tears can be related to meds.
Generally, fresh red blood is from lower GI. Black blood is usually from the stomach or esophagus (it's gone through digestion).
I have not heard blood in the stool related to Malarone or Babesia. I would be concerned if it happens again. GI bleeds are nothing to mess around with.
There are also meds that cause blistering on the mucus membranes. This is very dangerous and can be a precursor to Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Malarone is not a known offender, but everyone is different.
My husband can't tolerate Malarone because it gives him canker sores. But he is fine on Mepron and other Babesia meds.
We have many med options. I wouldn't take something with the potential for a terrible side effect. Just my opinion.

Not that I'm aware of. It's an allergic reaction, so it's not really the med per se, but the patient's reaction to it. That makes it difficult to predict.

It can cause bleeding from the rectum. Read below and then open the web-site> Be careful, and I hope your doctor is watching out for your daughter! Hope she's doing ok!!!!
Malarone side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Malarone: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
severe or uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea;
fever, mouth sores;
problems with speech, balance, or walking;
severe skin rash;
nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); o
easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin.

Thank you Boxer mom and Steve. We stopped the drug and the bleeding only in stool stopped. She was under alot of stress those days midterms. Maybe compounding it or other choices of drugs / natural medicine to heal Babesia! Please advise
