Apparently the body develops an enzyme that kicks artemisinin out of the body fast, so you can't take it very long without it losing all effectiveness. Some docs recommend breaks.
Does anyone have any science on how long the breaks need to be to push the "reset button"?

I just can tell you that my rather famous lyme doc had me take art Friday through Sunday of each week.
So, he must believe that a 4 day break is sufficient.
It worked for me. It took away my babs herx symptoms like a miracle. And, I was cured of babs with Bactrim DS and the pulsed art.
The length of the break does NOT seem to be the important thing. Rather, it is the length of the treatment. Resistance begins after 5 days. Therefore, don't take it longer than 4-5 days in a row.
This thread gives you the study if you don't already have it:
As you can see, I took it only 3 days in a row. Every week, I herxed like clockwork. But, with the 3 days of art in a row, the herx immediately went down to nearly nothing and each week it was significantly decreased so that in no time I had to really pay attention to find any herx symptom (like the overwhelming need to nap IMMEDIATELY.)
So, it was extremely effective the way I was told to take it.
