Yesterday my doctor put me on Doxycyline 100mg. I'm taking 1 in the AM, 1 in the PM and then increase to 2-2 in two weeks. Since if been sick for over 2 years and never taken any type of antibiotic, he wanted to start me off slow before we get aggressive with other antibiotics such as IV Rocephin, Flagyl, and another one that starts with a p.
I was wondering what should I expect with the doxy? He told me lots of nausea (to add to the nausea I already have 😑) but is there anything else?
I took my first pill about 39 minutes ago and am already throwing up. Is that normal??

Hi stefi42, congratulations on starting treatment.
There are some important tips to know when taking Doxy. Do not have any dairy, magnesium, or iron within two hours of taking it or it will not be absorbed properly. If it makes you nauseous, eat something substantial and non-dairy before taking it. Sometimes it helps to take it in the middle of a meal.
Avoid the sun when taking Doxy. You can get a severe burn in minutes even when wearing sunscreen. When I took it, my knuckles got severely burned from the sun shining through the car window when I was driving!
Do not lay down for at least an hour after taking it or you can ulcerate your esophagus. This is very painful. Drink a full glass of water when you take it for the same reason.
Whenever you take any antibiotics, be sure to take high-quality acidophilus at least two hours away from the meds. This helps to prevent yeast overgrowth. The best kind to get have a high-culture count and are refrigerated. Most health-food stores carry this.

Yes, with doxy you have to take it in the middle of a full meal or you will be sick to your stomach.
So, eat half the meal, take the doxy, and then eat the other half.
Ditto to everything else Sammi said.
Take a probiotic 2 or 3 hours after taking the doxy. This will restore the gut flora. 2 or 3 hours is what it takes to get the doxy out of the stomach, so that is when you want to take the probiotic.

On the pill bottle it said to take it on an empty stomach and my doctor said it would be more potent that way but if I get too nauseous then I will have to eat it with a meal.
I already have my probiotic so I'm just waiting to take it along with all my other supplements.

If your doctor said that, then he is NOT a lyme literate doctor.
No patient can continue on doxy if they take it on an empty stomach. You will soon be vomiting as you already are.
So, if you want to be able to continue taking it, do what the lyme docs all say to do--as we have advised you.
And, get to a lyme doctor.

He is a Lyme doctor. And he told me it is more potent that way but I most likely will not be able to stomach it. He said I can try to take it that way but if not to take it with a meal. I tried it on an empty stomach bc when I was looking up the medicine, it said to do that along with the big print in the pill bottle that says to take it on an empty stomach.

Doxycycline cautions:
1. Even autumn or winter sun, even early morning or late afternoon sun can burn. "Doxy burns" can be very rough.
avoid sunlight on your skin (even "bounced" sun - or through a window) even for weeks after stopping doxycycline if you go onto a different antibiotic.
2. DO NOT TAKE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH
Food with doxy is vital to protect stomach. But no dairy. Do not take with any multi minerals, either. The food minerals will lessen the medicine level and make it not as effective.
A substantial meal, in the middle with some food before and after the doxycycline really matters.
Protect stomach but do not take a PPI - proton pump inhibitor (they have some negative effects). take doxy with a substantial snack or meal - in the middle so you've got some food before and after
Avoiding gluten can help with the stomach, too.
3. keep torso as close to upright as possible for at least 30 minutes after doxycycline taken so as to help protect esophagus from the irritation it can cause if lying down.
Depending upon the angle of the particular chair, the most upright position of a recliner MIGHT be okay if you must rest your head or put your feet up, just don't slink down.
PROTECT EARS / HEARING - when taking certain Rx, the ears need protection. Ear plugs with a hair dryer . . . decibel rated muffs with a blender, vacuum, lawn equipment, etc.
Careful around loud music and best to avoid in the ear pods. There is a link in the Liver Support thread that explains why. -
