I am still suffering from bronchitis/asthma. every morning I have a harsh coughing fit where I cough up a chunk of yellowish green very thick, almost solid, mucous.

off to dr. he told me it was from using a sleep aid, like elavil, ativan, etc. said breathing problems are caused by being so sedated my lungs do not expand enough and they collect mucous at night which I don't clear because I don't breath deeply. he said its a major concern for senior, ha, citizens like me who have insomnia issues.

he suggested stopping all aids, elevating bed, and taking mucinex plus inhaler.

have you ever heard of this?

I do not sleep more than 3-4 hours unless I take something.

It doesn't make sense that it takes a sleeping aid to get you to sleep for three or four hours yet this would make you "so sedated" that you couldn't breathe right.

The rest of what he said sounds like decent advice though. Mucinex is supposed to break up biofilms too [Smile]

Do Ambien (zolpidem). It causes no issues in me.

I tried ambien and lunesta. I had such vivid nighmares with yelling and thrashing around my husband woke me up.

melatonin causes extreme anxiety and rapid heartbeat.

the doc says I react to almost everything and not in a good way either. one of my sisters is the same way.

Do you mean you can fall asleep without anything for 3-4 hours, but need something to keep you asleep???

If you can fall asleep on your own, but wake up maybe try Intermezzo? It's very low dose ambien intended for people who wake in middle of night.

Maybe low dose wouldn't affect you the same way ambien regular dose does???

You have to be very careful not to get hooked on Ativan. Then you have to keep increasing the dosage to get the sleep you need. Soon, you are feeling worse than when you began.

Words from friends who have been there.

I take Ativan once in awhile, but I have a healthy respect for it.

The only trouble is that YOU need your sleep and staying awake all the time raises your blood pressure.

Perhaps you could get by with just the elavil?

sorry should explain more clearly.

I go to bed around 10, lay there for an hour till 11 or 12, then sleep maybe an hour or so, wake up around 1 or so, get more sleep until 3, then awake again. another catnap and husband gets up about 6 waking me up. don't go back to sleep but feel exhausted all day. get sleepy around 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

when I take elavil 10mg, I go to bed about 10 or 11, get up about 1 to pee, go back to sleep until he wakes me up at 6, then lay back down and sleep till 9 or 10. feel like a zombie all day.

my sleep is really messed up.

yeah it is. he's gone 5-6 days a week anyway so I can sleep late.

I'm reducing the ativan to a quarter of a pill now.
