Curious if anyone has the MTHFR gene and has had problems with taking antibiotics?

I can't metabolize any meds well and since I've had Lyme, even a new presripription for Estradiol (because Lyme, of course thrown me into menopause) made me tremor for days.

I don't see an LLMD for 4 more weeks, but tried the Mepron/azithro combo and went off of it after a few days because I just couldn't handle the bad thoughts, heart palpitations, and became completely unable to function. I know it's probably a herx, but it's taken 3 days for me to feel half way back to baseline, which wasn't great to start with.

Anyone else with MTHFR or inability to methylate well have similar issues? Suggestions?

Thank you!

Anybody with the MTHFR gene has problems taking antibiotics. A good lyme doc (but not a fair one or a poor one) will know how to handle this.

That gene means that you cannot detoxify. So, the doc will have to give you things to help you detoxify. For example, a prescription for IV glutathione that you can administer to yourself.

Many lyme patients start reacting to all types of medications. That is because the lyme puts our immune system on high alert. So, I got hives from my combination Estradiol/progesterone pill.

Lyme also gave me a false menopause. But, with good treatment, my ovaries started working normally again and after 7 years of having to take estrogen, etc. I became pre-menopausal again. So, take heart! Good lyme treatment can turn all of this around.

I wonder if you know how to use the "search" function here on LymeNet. See "search" near the top of the screen next to "FAQ."

Type in MTHFR as your search word and search the Medical Questions forum. You will find a WEALTH of information there from past posters who have had your same condition!

Here are a couple I found:

Hi KRN1067,

I am also a MTHFR. My LLMD put me on Deplin and B12 Hydroxocobolmine (sp?), it worked. I now detox much better.

If the 1967 in your user name is your DOB, you are probably in menopause. I am your age and Lyme pushed me into peri-menapause about 6 years ago.Which was pretty typical with all my other Lyme gfs who are close to my age.

Ask your LLMD about what I am taking. Good luck.

I notice you were on zith. I never could tolerate zith. I had to take Mepron with Biaxin.

I am homozygous for MTHFR.

Hey EWT 1638. Interestingly, menopause is what I thought was initially wrong with me because I started this journey waking up with night sweats and heart palpitations. I went to the gyn and she said "whatever it is, it's not menopause". Three months later (and half a head full of hair less), my labs were redrawn and now they tell me I'm post menopausal. I thank you for your advise and will ask the LLMD.

Sixgoofykids, how did your treatment go with the Mepron/Biaxin? May I ask, why couldn't you tolerate the azith?

I did the ILADS treatment for Lyme, bartonella, and babesia for two years then switched over to a natural treatment (photons, I went to Germany). The only time I felt improvement on ILADS treatment was when I was on the Mepron/Biaxin, so I guess you'd say it worked okay.

The problem was, anytime we switched me to a weaker treatment, the babesia came right back. We tried high doses of Malarone, but I declined.

The zith caused an extraordinary amount of pain and fatigue. I went from seeing improvement to being as sick as I was before treatment. We even tried cutting it back to a pulsed therapy. I was miserable. I had been in treatment for well over a year and had seen improvement. I switched from Biaxin to zith and was in tears in bed all day again.

I'm still trying to figure out the MTHFR. I need to get a look at the exact test that was given. My Dr. said I only have one defective gene. He didn't think it would be a huge issue.

However, I'm wondering if anyone has a multivitamin that has researched ingredients, etc. that has folate instead of folic?

I don't want to just buy a random one. I would rather know someone has tried and liked a certain brand.

oh, and I think we all tolerate drugs differently. I could not do rifampin. I just got worse and worse on it. It's hard to play the antibiotic game.

Hey, KRN, you posted the same thing a second time. I answered your question before your second post.

HW88 I've used Homocysteine Supreme by Designs for Health. It caused a pretty strong detox. I do better just eating a lot of greens. I have used other Designs for Health products and am on a couple now that also have the proper B vitamins and folate and seem to be better than that first go around with it. Go slowly whichever one you buy.

Thanks sixgoofykids, I really appreciate the referral and caution! Do you think just having one of the MTHFR gene mutations is a big deal?

From what research I have done on it... I don't think one is a big issue. The worst one is if you are double anything.

I am compound heterogygous (one of both kinds) and it isn't the worst but the next worst?

I am confused on this topic and wish for input too. I took some methyl b vitamins and even the smallest bit gives me a "b high" and effects my sleep!
