The new Karius test is a non-invasive blood test based on next-generation sequencing of microbial cell–free DNA. It can identify and quantify over 1000 clinically relevant pathogens including bacteria, DNA viruses, fungi, and parasites. Applications include complicated pneumonia, immunocompromised patients, and endocarditis.
It is approved by Medicare and Medicaid services. It is pricy, over 2,000 US dollars and should be billed through the gap policy. It must have prior approval through the necessary providers.
