I am diagnosed w/ lyme and bartonella. I have hyperpigmentation of my skin that started around the time that I probably had a tick bite that I was unaware of.
The NP treating me for lyme/bartonella as well as 2 dermatologists don't think it is a bart rash and I agree. I have seen pics and it is not the same. It is just darkened spots on my thighs, chest and now underside of my arms that seem to be spreading.
The derm I saw today reviewed my previous skin biopsies. She printed out info on Erythema Dyschromicum Perstans which I guess is the technical diagnosis. In the literature I read--there is a theory that an as yet unidentified set of pollutants in our environment, either contactants or inahled or ingested substances may be the cause of EDP. There have been sporadic case reports of temporal associations w/ ingestion of ammonium nitrate as well as whipworm infestations (can this be what people talk about w/ parasites?).
*Anyone ever heard of EDP? *Because of the timing of my diagnosis w/ lyme and this hyperpigmentation--would you think it is related or totally 2 separate issues? *Do you think this could be a result of heavy metals, parasites or a virus that triggered this?
Please know cosmetically I can deal w/ these spots. I am not concerned about making them go away IF they are indeed harmless, but I am trying to determine if there is a connection between this and my lyme and also a m/c I suffered in Sept 2010.

AnnaOD20, I have these brown spots on both of my thighs also.
I think they are around 4 or 5in. And yes, mine started around the same time I got sick.
No one has ever been able to tell me what they are.
I'm very interested to see what people have to say.

I had several of these spots on my face and jaw. I have treated extensively for parasites and for the most part they have faded.

It is caused from bartonella. It affects the pigment in the skin. Mine are pea size brown spots, which are typical. You can also have loss of pigment which is misdiagnosed as vitiligo.
When I treated bart, it went away. Even in the summer I had an even tan. But now it is coming back again. Worries me, but the new (and soon to be old) LLMD won't even get on the page of me having bart as I tested negative.

I don't think it's bartonella. The brown spots are nothing like the marks you get from bartonella.
Mine are like sq. about 4-5 in.

Thank you everyone. The NP does not think it is from bart and the pics I saw of this EDP looks more like it, but I do wonder now if it is some kind of reaction to a virus related to lyme or parasites (need to ask about that too). I am treating for Bart and although it has only been about 2 months I am not seeing any improvement (if anything seeing more of these dark spots)
I am really confused though...lyme, heavy metals (still waiting for test results) and/or parasites?!
Anything else that I should be considering and treating?
glm--what did you do to treat for parasites?

i believe that most of the HP is due to pitutary disfunction. HPA axis problems is common to all of us. the pitutary gland regulates melanon secreation. so, you can have too much or not enough causing moles or white spots etc.

I'm rolling with minerva on this, although I haven't thoroughly concluded this. These infections typically play with the HPA, which could be a by-product of an infection (bacterial or parasitical).
Anna and Steve, would you post some pictures of your spots?

EDP is Erythema Dyschromicum Perstans (scroll up to my initial post for info..it is the technical diagnosis I got from a derm).
Minerva/Wolfed Out--if this is pituatary relaed or HPA (what is that??) is there other follow up I should consider? Is this something I'd go to an endocrinologist for or another specialist?
Do you think this could be related to a separate virus or the lyme virus? Thanks for input!

Does anyone have any answers to EDP (Erythema) Dermatologists have suggested treatment with clofazimine or hydroxychloroquine. I haven't tried that yet. I'm still hopeful to find some research or a doctor that understands the link to Lyme and perhaps treat a different way. Any thoughts or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, lymeTX
