Can someone offer a suggestion? I am trying to find out if this doctor is taking new patients. I called twice--a week a part, and left a message on the answering machine. They actually say they don't check the answering machine everyday. I understand that, but to not return my call AT ALL? Not a good sign for responsiveness to patients-- or is it just me? Any advice would be helpful.

I would call again.
This doctor is quite in demand now, so they may be backlogged. The doctor is quite knowledgeable and caring, so in this case, it would not be for lack of caring.
It's not the only LLMD's office that gets overwhelmed. There are so many patients and not as many LLMD's as would be ideal.

As a PS, I have found with some swamped doctors' offices that it is more helpful to either email or fax them, so you could look online to see what the fax or email address is and do that. It will stand out a little more than the tons of likely VM's that the office gets.
