Confused about Thyroid tests.

Which one should you watch out for or do periodically, if any?

What do the results mean? I know some values can fluctuate throughout the day. Are there any values that are important to know, like how they change over time?

Any opinions much appreciated.

TSH, free T3, free T4 are good tests.

I get them once a year.

Your doctor should be able to explain the results. I always have to look up what the parameters are for each test.

Having TSH test only is not enough.

If you need more info, the FB group Thyroid Advocates has great info.

PS.. Don't let your doctor get away with ONLY doing the TSH each year. It can be "just fine" and your thyroid be a wreck.

Ok, I added the antibodies as well to my wish list. I think I had them 20 years ago in a noticeable range. Wonder what is happening with that. =]

this MD specializes in thyroid issues and has a lot of free online material including exactly what to test and when - and how to interpret the test results.

I now think about the thyroid gland as a kind of Canary in the coal mine - in that it is often the first thing to shout if there is an autoimmune triggering health condition going on.
where this may be due to any of the usual suspects of infection, heavy metals, mold, stress etc.
I first tested positive for Hashimoto's thyroiditis around 5 years before getting properly ill.

whilst I do not believe everything about the condition( Hashimoto's) is well enough understood yet - I find his presentation is a step in the right direction.

Important thyroid tests are Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid antibody tests.
