Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the source of Bartonella anxiety? I had it myself years ago and it was the most horrible thing I ever experienced. Now I have a friend who is experiencing it.

I wonder why so many things that help regular anxiety do not help bartonella anxiety. Do we know its etiology? Any links to research would be helpful but even if it is just something you have learned in your journey, it would be interesting for me to know.

Thanks so much,
Eloise

ps

OR if you don't know what the source of it is, if anything has helped with your bartonella induced horrid anxiety, that would be great to know. Anything besides benzos and antibiotics!

thanks!

Hi Eloise,

I am on the same boat. I like the idea of knowing exactly HOW Bart causes anxiety versus saying its symptom of the infection.

I haven't treated in 2 months. No relief. It's been HELL with my anxiety. Unfortunately anxiety isn't the only thing I have.

Sometimes I dont even know if the infection is to blame anymore for the anxiety. Maybe it's situational? Or both?

About to start a very slow taper on my benzo

I know that. Maybe I am not clear in my question. I know it is Bartonella. I just wonder why the anxiety doesn't respond to certain treatments that "regular anxiety" responds to.

It is a physiological anxiety, rather than being based on anything in particular to be anxious about.

I'm also interested whether anyone treated their anxiety with any success with something other than benzos or antibiotics. Treating with antibiotics can cause a herx that will increase anxiety.

Very difficult.

I would hope that once it's eradicated, the anxiety will be gone or mostly gone.

Have you tried rifing?

Thanks, Lymetoo. I am asking right now for my friend. My anxiety resolved when Bartonella was eradicated, yes. I am just wondering if there is anything he can do in the mean time.

I don't know if rife would help anxiety. He is getting antibiotic treatment and his anxiety is through the roof.

The bacteria which cause Lyme Disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, cross the blood/brain barrier and can cause psychiatric problems as well as physical ones.

Here are some links which you might find helpful:

Dr B is the top LL Psychiatrist. He has a lifetime of experience treating neuropsychiatric Lyme and is one of the major authorities on it. He will treat psychological problems from Lyme, but not Lyme itself.

these diseases are rarely sole infections and their effects tend to be multisystemic - such that they affect multiple systems in the body that then go on to affect all others

eg the gut microbiome and leakiness is affected - causing changes in neurotransmitters ( mainly produced in the gut) and systemic inflammation that then affects the brain

liver function is impacted causing poor detoxification - affecting all systems in tehbody

hormones are dysregulated by inflammation etc etc

however 2 key mechanisms that lead to anxiety in bartonella are
- bartonella produces or causes the body to produce excess quinolinic acid in the brain - this is hyper inflammatory and causes excitotoxicity
- bartonella is primarily a disease of the small blood vessels - causing poor circulation, poor nutrient supply to the cells and poor toxin removal from the cells and hypoxia - leading to reduced function - in the brain this can be experienced as cognitive difficulties - including reduced capacity to think your way out of problems - or reach wrong/inappropriate "solutions" - or other forms of distorted or irrational thoughts. when CNS functions are reduced - and the individual is distressed - often the response is thinking becomes about most basic primal instincts - fear and anger which can rapidly spiral.

Im not sure exactly what about bart causes the anxiety and rage, but mine went away thank God.

now my husband has it (the rage)...
I started calling him "bart" when he goes off and it eases the tension from his rages.

I broke a door once with my rage! I was vacuuming and went offf on the door with the vacuum hose and attachment! boy oh boy, yikes... I had it bad. now all gone!

Thank you very much, Garz. This is all very interesting. I wonder if there is anything to help reduce the excess quinolinic acid.
