I'm digging around trying to find the best approach to taking cholestyramine 3x a day. I usually eat two meals a day, and there are 2 times/day that I need to take supplements/meds etc. I'm trying to figure out the best approach to scheduling all this in regards to the cholestyramine interfering with the other meds/supplements.

Depending on what you read, you are supposed to wait up to several hours BEFORE AND AFTER cholestyramine before taking other meds. That could be tough to do 3x per day while still needing to take other meds etc. twice also.

Anybody have good, specific timing/scheduling ideas on this? I'm going to be taking cholestyramine for the foreseeable future, so I'm wanting to make it the most feasible and effective as possible. Thoughts?

I take cholestyramine, and have on and off for years. It really has to be on a very empty stomach to be effective.

I take it when I wake up at night. For me, it needs to be taken 2 hours before and after eating anything.

I just can’t go 4 hours without eating. I take one dose a day, unless I sleep real well. Then I miss that dose.

At one dose a day it works, slowly, barely keeping up with my needs, but I’ll take it.

To be effective cholestyramine needs to be taken right before a meal with at least a tiny bit of fat content. That way it binds immediately to the bile that is dumped from the gall bladder in the intestine.
If you take it on an empty stomach and dont eat for hours there is nothing to bind to.

I have found it helpful, but only when taken once daily and only the pure form of cholestyramine. So no questran or questran-A (the aspartame was the worst!). Taking more than one dose a day seemed counterproductive in my case.

So to answer your question, maybe you can add another meal to the day, and only take cholestyramine once or twice a day? That would allow more time for meds to be absorbed.

I guess we should be clear about why Spaceboy is taking the cholestyramine before going on.

I use it because I have a detox pathway blockage. Normally toxins are put in fat cells that get taken into the intestines and removed from the body. In my case it all stops at the intestines.

If I have a totally empty stomach, cholestyramine pulls those fat cells into the intestines.

I haven’t used cholestyramine for gall bladder health, so can’t say anything about that use.

I also need to correct myself—I need to wait only one hour after the dose before eating.

Hi All,

First off, I'm taking the CSM again for probable mold and maybe lyme issues.

Thanks for the input on the dosing. I'm still trying to get a schedule down. I've been herxing a decent amount so something is going on... Still trying to get it sorted, and also thinking more about detox now too. I had very good experiences in the past with a homemade sauna for fixing the misery of herxes. I might need to put that old sauna back together again....

Another CSM idea - thoughts?

I've been wondering if I have a long stretch during the day without meals or the need to take supplements, meds, etc. if I could try this:

During the middle of the day, take a dose of CSM, wait an hour or two and then take another dose. Would this be adequate time between the two doses, and would they both likely be effective? This would make it easier to get multiple doses in per day without possibly interacting/interfering with meds/supplements.

What do you folks think?
