My husband just got diagnosed with Lyme, 3 weeks after being bitten. They have prescribed 3 weeks of doxycycline and a probiotic. We'd like to see a specialist in the NYC area just to make sure his treatment is on track.
Thanks!

Three weeks of antibiotics is hardly enough to treat Lyme!

Your husband needs to be evaluated and treated by a Lyme-literate doctor. Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease and its complex treatment.

PM sent.

See Support Groups on left side of the page.

I don't know of any good lyme doctors in NYC. But I do know of some in NYC that charge unbelievable amounts for their treatment which I don't consider to be good.

If you are willing to travel to see someone good, let me know.

Should we go to New Jersey? Connecticut?

Those in New Jersey say there is nobody really good there.

Here are a few posts on the topic:

I suggest you edit your post to put more states in the subject line. Then, others who have names for those states may respond.

Just click on the paper and pencil icon above your original post and add names of other states, or just say "in the Northeast US."

If you have not already done so, I suggest you learn all about treatment of this disease by reading the Burrascano Lyme Treatment Guidelines found here:

As a NJ Lyme sufferer, I back up TF 100% on this. There are a ton of NY docs who charge a lot and do very little in the way of getting you well. A few in NYC were once considered to be good but have burned out and not kept up with research/newer tx methods etc. Most of them are just Charlatans.

NJ is a wasteland of bad docs. There's a few good docs here that aren't LLMDs but will treat as best they can -IF- you test positive for lyme with their Labcorp tests. I've heard at least a few of them call Igenex "controversial" - which is a pretty dumb thing to hear from someone with an advanced degree. If Igenex was actually controversial, they wouldn't be in business. Anyway, if you catch Lyme early, these are the best guys to see. If you have serious problems, look into going out of state.

Thanks everyone! These comment have been really helpful!

They say catching it 3 weeks after the bite is "early"? So far the antibiotics are working fine but our main concern is the length of treatment.

We have made an appointment with Dr V** who does take some insurance. Without insurance it's $200 per visit.

Here he is in this video at a Lyme conference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzHRzY9WxXQ (around minute 22:00)

Most of the other docs I've been recommended by the TBDAlliance charge OUTRAGEOUS prices and don't convince us.

**edited name of LLMD per rules**

He will probably be fine because your case is early and hopefully you didn't contract any co-infections. See how it goes and hopefully it will go well.

However, do your own research, be informed before your visit. You must be your own advocate with this disease.

Be sure there is no break in treatment.
