I am new to this board and front PA. My son is a student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He had a rash and has developed several Lyme symptoms such as extreme fatigue, joint pain, sensitivity to light and sound. Can anyone on this board recommend a good Lyme Doctor in the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham area? Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to Lymenet Pandaman

You can request Lyme Literate Medical Doctors (LLMD’s) from Global Lyme Alliance;
https://www.globallymealliance.org/lyme-patient-support/find-medical-professional/

Also LLMD’s are available from ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Duseases Society) ;
https://www.ilads.org/patient-care/provider-search/

These are simple e-mail formats that you fill out and they respond back. You must research any referrals. To do this, google for patient reviews of join your area’s Lyme support groups.

Here is the Alabama Lyme Support group ;
https://rawlsmd.com/lyme-support/united-states/alabama/alabama-lyme-support-group

Post any questions you may have on Lymenet forum.
Members will respond.
Be sure to utilize Lymenet’s ‘search’ function located in the middle of home page. So much information on all things Lyme.

Hope your son finds prompt treatment! When calling for your appointment, you must stress he’s in the early stages. Cure is possible.

Hi! Welcome to LymeNet!

Sorry, but I don't have any names for you.

Your son needs to be evaluated and treated by a Lyme-literate doctor (LLMD). Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease or its complex treatment!

A LLMD is one who has treated Lyme disease and the co-infections which come with it for many years and has gotten patients well. A good one will follow Dr. B's Guidelines, the "gold standard" for Lyme treatment.

Here is a link for them:

http://www.lymenet.org/BurrGuide200810.pdf

Unfortunately, LLMDs are far and few between. He needs to go where they are.

Most LLMDs do not accept insurance due to the politics surrounding this horrible disease. Read poster TF's explanation, "Why Lyme Doctors Don't Take Insurance":

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=025539;p=0

When calling for an appointment, ask if they have any cancellations or a waiting list. Patients have been able to get in sooner by doing this.

Contact the AL Lyme Support Groups - they would know better about Alabama.

https://whatislyme.com/lyme-in-alabama/

https://www.lymenet.org/SupportGroups/UnitedStates/Alabama/

Read the books written by the top LLMD, Dr. H, titled, "Why Can't I Get Better?" and "How Can I Get Better?". They are an excellent source of information.

Also read "Cure Unknown" by Pamela Weintraub. Check your local library or buy them used on online.

Btw - I know you are new to LymeNet, but please break up your posts into 2-3 sentence paragraphs, as there are people here who cannot read large blocks of text due to neurological problems from Lyme. Thanks.
