Hi everyone
My daughter has been on antis for about 6 yrs. All though her life is fairly normal, she still appears to suffer some of the effects of Lyme. She seems to need a lot more sleep and from time to time she has spells where headache, stomach and related flu-like simptoms do occur. So is it Lyme or is it the flu? All I hear and read about that you can't really test for the organism because of the antibodies/titer built up in ones' body and you have to count on the persons symptoms. A catch 22/ in-limbo feeling is where we are at. Does anyone know of a clinical test that an test for the organism even after years of antis? If so, I would like to hear about it.

Russ,

Not sure if its Lyme or not to tell you the truth, but one suggestion is to make sure you have taken care of not only the lyme, but coinfections, and systemic candida which often sets in with abx treatment and can cause all the same symptoms.

check this out.

sometimes complete remission is not possible with lyme. the organism can change the neurotransmitters in the brain, the gaba receptor.

for the fatigue a pharmacologist might help, maybe a trial of provigil. SSRI's could be helpful for this too. lastly is an obvious regimen of graded exercise for toning and stamina. light weights, pilates, etc.

as for the other symptoms...

rather than testing for lyme antibody you can check her immune system and juxtapose the testing to her condition at present.

you can have your gp or llmd run her total IgG (immunoglobulins - antibody proteins) and more specifically her IgG subsets (IgG 1,2,3,4).

another good, cheap test is a 'circulating immune complex'. if the number is out of range, being high, that means that their is an active infection in the body.

there is more elaborate testing for the immune system that could be done but you would have to see an immunologist concomitantly.

the formerly mentioned tests can be easily run by any doctor if you ask.

it sounds like she is doing okay, otherwise... so best of luck mopping up the rest!!!

There is a PCR test, which if positive, shows active infection. It looks for antigen, not antibody. Problem is that it is hard to find spiros in the blood, especially small quantity, so there are lots of false negatives. MDL does this test if you want to go fishing.

Zip - is this circulating immune complexes test commercially available? You are not talking about lyme circulating complexes, right? This is the one I wished we had available.

lou - just a regular circulating immune complex, not antigen bound.

I would make sure she is free of candida. Perhaps a month of diflucan would be a good idea. LLMD's are now prescribing 200mg of diflucan for a month or more to clear any candida that may be lingering.

Have you considered Rife? It's a great way to clean up the aftermath and get off abx.

Hi Russ, welcome to LymeNet.

You've been given some helpful suggestions.
Would like to ask a few questions that come to mind, but you're not required to answer.

How did you locate a dr to treat her?
Was she treated by a LLMD (Lyme Literate Med Dr)?
Not just a dr who they say treats Lyme, but a dr who sees almost nothing but Lyme patients every day.

How old is your daughter?
If she's young, how much does she weigh?
(Dr B's recommendations for Amoxicillin are based on a child's weight.)

Could you give an example of what antibiotics she was on?
....what dose per day & how long?

This info would show if she received adequate treatment or the typical dose of antibiotics, which is usually half that recommended by LLMDs.

A good source of info about Lyme & Co-Infections is "Diag Hints & Treat Guidelines..." at - www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.html

I recommend printing a copy. It's about 32 pages of excellent info written by one of the best LLMDs in the country. It's used by drs & patients.

If she's under 18, would your dr consider calling a Lyme Pediatrician for a consultation?

Dr Charles Ray Jones
New Haven, CT
Phone: 203 - 772 - 1123
Fax: 1 - 203 - 772 - 0682 (I've heard this gets a quicker response because they're so busy.)

Read "Children of L.D." written by Dr Jones. www.wildernetwork.org/LDpediatricfund.html

We don't give drs' names here unless they've given permission.
Dr Jones has.

On the left of this page, click Lyme Disease Association & get their brochure "The ABCs of Lyme Disease" - great collections of writings about how LD can affect children. Keep in mind, they are not discussing mild cases of Lyme, but want to show how complicated it can be.

On the left, click Support Groups & contact any that are near you. Good source of info, especially concerning drs in the area.
You want a Lyme Dr who has lots of satisfied customers!

Keep in touch & let us know how she's doing.
We care!!

I believe the IgM part of the Western Blot, if it has Lyme bands, indicates active infection.
