Hi,

Well, are wrapping up the school year. (no small feat with our lyme kids).

I am trying to decide if I should have 15yr old daughter do correspondence health course for credit this summer.

We will homeschool, attending small homeschool high school course, probably 3 will be plenty.

She wants to go back to school for Jr. and Sr. year. I think she may change her mind if she has good year in homeschool community and can start Jr. college for dual credit.

She is loathe to do school work this summer, but we need credits if she goes back...I am concerned whether to force as it seems to be partly fatigue issue. She did one course tutored this yr and it was a lot for her.

Anyway, will your kids do school work this summer?

What is your take?

Char

Hi Char!
I think it is a good idea for your 15-yr-old to do a course this summer. It keeps the brain active and will be interesting for her and you.

I bet you both learn some really neat stuff about health. With one course only, maybe she can handle it.

You said
"We will homeschool, attending small homeschool high school course, probably 3 will be plenty."

I am not sure what this means. 3 what? but attending a course is a good idea for your kiddo too. The interaction will be good for her.

Hope it all works out.
Hugs,
Ann - OH

Hi An,

By 3 I meant 3 courses. She will attend Biology and writing and composition at a homeschool program that meets weekly and we are signed up for afternoons, thank goodness. 6-12 kids in class, so very nice socially. The homeschool families and their kids tend to be kind and tolerant of differences. The teachers are more focused on learning than production. I hope this works out and we can avoid reentry into the public school system.

Someone just told me a large percentage of merit scholars last yr were homeschooled.

The 3rd course will be Algebra 1 with a very small group or tutored one on one. There is a program Math U Can See that uses manipulatives for Algebra. I am looking into this as her math brain is "stuck in park" her words. Considering waiting til brain fog is better, but under intense pressure from physics prof in-laws to get on this life or death situation. She is 15 so if she can go slow and really learn the material it would probably help her not be overwhelmed with a mountain of math to tackle the following year.

She struggled with taking 1 accelerated course in her strength this year. I think she will gain momentum learning with other kids as she is people person. Do have concerns about her keeping up.

I think you are right to go ahead with the summer course. She can take up to 9mos to complete, although we don't want to get backed up there.

Thanks for listening. What is your opinion on our fall plan?

Char

I think you will know what to do when fall comes.
It is so hard to know how the summer will go....

I surely wish both of you a good summer and some fun as well as learning.

Char,
both of my sons have LD ,, and they went for home schooling but that was far too taxing on me to continue more than 2 years I wnet for online education after that and they loved it.. they could do what and when they choose to do things.. gave them time on the days they felt loosy and left the rest to catch up when they felt like taking on the world...

I also after they went for a year and a half decided to better my own position adn take online college courses more costly but more able to give it my best on the days I could...
I know with LD and kids that they have little energy to put out.. and public schools are so taxing with the added time in the day doing stuff that is not part of required time in school...

I think there is a well brought up point that doing summer might be too taxing on the level of energy required to keep going although there are benefits to keeping on task .. like the mentle stimulation which is neccessary with this illness....

it seems when one rests this bug takes a strong hold too.. it will be more of a balance game here ... too much can do harm and too little can do harm as well ...

I wish you well in your decisions .. leave this one up to your daughter ... she can guage how well she feels ... let her decide if she can handle it or not...she is old enough now to make that call!
the best to you and yours!
Linda D

Good deal!!! keep active and stimulated .. slowing down will harm more than help.. and having a good time is great too!!!
these bugs seem to feed on stress!!!! they simply love it when people are under stress... seems adult get hit hardest ... as they tend to deal with more stress on a daily basis....dont' get me wrong kids have it too .. but with bills and all; we never get a break!!!
have a sunny, funny summer!!
