Many of you know that I have a deep seeded love of surfing even though I dont get to do it much and I am terrible at it. I first learned to REALLY surf as a gift to myself after i finally got my lyme under control in 2002. There is nothing quite like it. This last summer I went surfing right after an oopherectomy and many said---DONT GO, or be careful. but it was, as usual, the most healing thing I could have done for myself.

There is a new book just released--still in hard back about a man who has/had lyme and his spiritual journey to healing that primarily involves SURFING!!!! I can hardly believe my eyeballs. It is called:

WEST OF JESUS: Surfing, Science and the origins of belief by steven kotler

I read half the book in one sitting last night. He is very realistic about lyme and it's devastating effects and talks about how he didnt surf for 6 years and then for a VERY long time when he did surf it took him 2 weeks of resting to recover from a two hour, not rigorous session.

I am very leary of books that preach about how getting off your duff is the only way to heal or snap out of it charlie or if you let go of your childhood anger or anything like that, and so far this book is NOT like that. it might turn into that, but I am doubtful. There is no blaming the sick here or simple answers, just his own spiritual path that somehow also coincided with relief from most of his lyme symptoms.

I have to meet this man. His experiences mimic mine in many many ways. he is my male twin in many regards. Anyone know him?

So far I recommend the book. you can get it on amazon and if you link to amazon from this site then some proceeds go to lymenet or something---i dont know the details of that, just know it is good.

read away!

Hi Trails,

Well, living in a surf city myself (San Diego) I just had to read your post. I don't know Steven Kotler but his name immediately rang a bell. So when I did a google search, and saw that he's published many articles, I realized I must have read some magazine articles by him.

There's a website about him at www.stevenkotler.com with a list of speaking engagements and his email address. I bet he would love to know you are spreading the word about his book.

The book sounds inspiring!

Here's another thought, maybe you could write a book review for one of the Lyme publications. I just started writing for the Lyme Times (California Lyme Disease Association) and they sometimes have a book review by a volunteer of a Lyme-related book.

Anyway, let us know what you think of the book when you are finished. Happy surfing!

Jill
