* This project is part of a larger award. The amount indicated is for all components of the parent grant. The amount specific to this component is not available due to limitations in data made available by NIH. This type of multi-project award is counted once in the Total for Grants Retrieved, even if the parent grant appears multiple times in the results table.
** NIH CRISP institution names are inconsistent. Every effort has been made to match the institution name(s) provided by CRISP against the name used by the NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities (NIH OBA, source of the IBC data). If you encounter an institution with a registered IBC that is not accurately matched with IBC data in CRISPER, please let us know. Registered IBCs are required at all institutions with NIH funding for work involving recombinant DNA. In addition, IBCs are to oversee work involving bioweapons agents. All errors in names, addresses, and numbers for IBCs are the responsibility of NIH OBA. Limitations in CRISP prevent indicating an IBC for grants that are unpaid or which are made to NIH's own scientists.

Okay, then I have one more question. How much money is SUPPOSED to be supplied by the NIH toward Lyme research this year?
The CDC and the NIH are notorious for siphoning off money for their own expenses and not giving it where it should go. If it's not going where it should, it's time that they be held accountable.

Lou, great find! Some looked very interesting.
Ali, did you put this info here for Tincup? If yes, please copy it to her post, but when you paste it to a reply there,
please break it up since it appears to be 2 lines than a different one; please split it up after 2 lines if that's the story ok.
Tincup has very LOW vision too, and this way she'll be able to comprehend what you are posting there. THANKS! Bettyg

$5 million for the past 10 years, which is as far back as the database goes, I think. We know he has been getting funded longer than that, so the total is even higher. Methinks this is why university administrators love him, he brings in the gravy, got a special reserved seat on the gravy train.
Shaz, there is no specified amount to be spent on lyme, etc. They just spend whatever they want on whoever they want to do the research. The chronic fatigue people battled for years to get money appropriated by Congress specifically for that ailment; then the CDC spent it elsewhere. Big stink, Congress censured the CDC director. But the guys under him who actually did this switching were protected. They are some of the same people who have shafted lymies.
BTW, the total for lyme at NIH in 2006 includes some multi-year projects that were started previously and continued into 2006.

Interesting abstract:
Grant Number: 1R01AI043063-01 PI Name: CABELLO, FELIPE C. PI Email: [email protected] PI Title: PROFESSOR Project Title: REGULATION OF EXPRESSION OF BORRELIA BURGDORFERI BMPC
Abstract: Lyme disease is a multisystem, tick-borne chronic infection caused by the persistence of the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.
B. burgdorferi has the ability to proliferate in a variety of niches in reservoir and human hosts as well as in the vector lxodes scapularis.
Preliminary evidence indicates that differential gene expression resulting from environmental stimuli in one of the mechanisms that allows bacterial to adapt rapidly to fast changing environments found during infection and disease of vectors and hosts.
We and others have described a family of chromosomal genes (bmpA-D) encoding homologous 36.9-39.8 kDa lipoproteins of the p39 family.
The tandem chromosomal location of the bmp genes, their homology and overlapping regulatory signals together with the potential surface location of the proteins they encode in addition to their apparent up regulation by environmental stimuli suggests the hypothesis that these proteins may be important for B. burgdorferi survival in different environments.
In this project, we propose to study the effects environmental stimuli have on bmpC, a member of this gene family first described by us, both in vitro and in vivo in mice and ticks, in an effort to improve our understanding of the mechanisms employed by B. burgdorferi to enable it to persist and thrive in vectors and hosts.
The long-range goal of our efforts is to improve understanding of B. burgdorferi gene expression despite the lack of genetic systems that would facilitate this work.
The specific aims of the current project are:
1) identify anti-BmpC Mab and polyclonal antibodies not cross-reactive with BmpD, BmpA and BmpB and use them to characterize BmpC protein and confirm its localization and lipidation in B. burgdorferi 297;
2) Determine levels of expression and mechanisms of regulation of bmpC under different in vitro and in vivo conditions; and
3) Determine genetic organization and DNA structural and regulatory sequences of bmpC in B. burgdorferi, B. afzelii and B. garinii genospecies and in B. burgdorferi 297 grown under different conditions in vitro and in vivo.
The latter studies will indicate whether different levels of transcription are secondary to changes in the regulatory and structural DNA sequences of the bmpC gene.

Hmmm....this is not a name that gets mentioned much. A dark horse. Wish I thought this was going to do US some good, as opposed to the research machine. Not expecting much good coming out of Valhalla.

Good work. Looks to me as if Tulane is going to get around 8 million for neurological infection work with chimps. I know some people despise that kind of experimentation, but it allows for the direct study of infected tissue, rather than the tests that measure human infection.
The one that really got me was this study- 11 5K08MH065360-05 HASSETT, AFTON THE ROLE OF CO-MORBID MENTAL DISORDERS IN LYME DISEASE Total: $130,607 To my mind, this is to prove "its all in their heads". If they rig it, we are in even deeper trouble. And they do rig studies.

I Googled Afton Hassett, and look what I found.
Chronic Lyme disease: Sigal and Hassett's response ...Leonard H. Sigal Afton L. Hassett UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School New Brunswick, New Jersey
Hassett is a psychologist working with Lenny Sigal. Imagine, Psychology and Rheumatology united. Right up there with the Alchemy and Astrology for evidence based conclusions. Seriously, we need to figure out how to monitor these "researchers".

No offense lou..
But sometimes when I see your name next to a post.. I get sick to my stomach before I open it!
And I mean that with every kind word and thought that I can possibly muster up.
I know you are the one to find the crazy ****** they are doing and bring it to light... which is so important.. so I almost panic when I see your name posting something like this topic title.
You do wonderfully at finding it.. but the contents of what you post just makes me sick. I know you must feel that churn in the tummy too when you read the trash they produce.
They are living nightmares!
But.. thank you now.. and always... for posting the facts... as sucky as they may be.

Hi all Found this link when searching for Steere. Is this what I think it means? It all comes down to $$$$$ My brain is foggy tonight so I can't be sure. What do you all think?
"Finally, the production of "robust" guidelines that are optimal for both individual persons and society can help reduce the need for individual persons to sacrifice clinically optimal strategies for the greater good.
However, this is not likely to be easy.
As society's resources become scarcer, clinical guidelines selected to optimize population effectiveness reflect individual needs less, making it more difficult for managed care organizations and other resource-allocating decision makers to balance individual and societal priorities. "
------------------------
Yes, I agree with the conclusion of $$$$.
So insurance companies reduce benefits (making big profits since costs are rising drastically) so everyone can have a little treatment, based on the needs of society (large populations), rather than the individual.
It has a social welfare/communistic flavor. The problem is that this is a capitalistic society, and there are levels of private funds available to go beyond the managed care costs for some people. And that is not even considering the horrible co-pays, discounts, etc.
But they take these "costs" factors, and do not allow, i.e. punish, those who can afford/find funds to do more effective treatment.
They punish by not allowing md's and individual patients to decide the therapy. To choose.
Then they try to support their "cost effective" therapies wtih poorly designed and implemented studies.
I, for one, do not believe that these policies are based on human concerns.

==============================================
That is not how I read this.
From Webster's online dictionary:
Main Entry: comorbid Pronunciation: (")kO-'mor-b&d Function: adjective Etymology: co- + morbid : existing simultaneously with and usually independently of another medical condition
Lyme disease not infrequently presents as a mental disorder, or a mental disorder commonly presents along with Lyme. For example, depression, paranoia, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, to name but a few. (What was the name of the football player in FL? Wyatt Sexton?)
And let's face it: one doesn't have to spend too much time on this board to see some of the psychological and psychiatric manifestations of Lyme disease and co-infections.
To me, anyway, it looks as if they are studying NOT Lyme as a mental disorder, but, rather, the relationship between Lyme and mental disorders.
This sounds to me like a good thing.

Well, Suzanne, it would be a good thing if the research was honest. A lot of good-hearted people keep thinking this about such studies, and find that they have an agenda. The subject of these studies coupled with the names of the researchers is usually a good indicator of what the outcome will be, plus the fact that NIH funded it.
Sorry if this confirms tincups opinion that I am the badnews bear. Actually, that is the way I feel about coming to lymenet. And see yet another doc being persecuted or suspended or whatever. Try not to blame the messenger, tincup. Knowledge is power. Besides that, kiddo, you have been absent for a good spell and are maybe not looking at a complete picture.
If people don't know what they are up against, they will not be able to muster the strength to fight for care. They will waste time trusting the medical profession to get it right, even in the face of news stories about medical errors, and everything else that goes with "modern" medicine and the ins co policies.
My personal feeling is that if people do not get sufficiently mad about this, no hell will be raised to change things. I can't see myself still searching desperately for care after another 7 years goes by. The last seven have just about slamdunked me, not to mention impoverishing me.
And anyway, how do you get bad news out of a post that describes current research, unless you automatically assume all of these studies will be worthless, which I have not done. Some might even help eventually. But year after year the molecular and genetic boys have a field day with lyme research. Meanwhile, we still can't get them to admit we need treatment for a chronic disease.

Do you know anything about this researcher? I don't, so will not assume a negative agenda until proven otherwise.

Suzanne, further up in this thread, see greatcod's post showing this guy worked with Lenny Sigal. Can check the legal cases in lymenet files, the Sigal deposition which shows extensive work with ins cos and others who deny care to lyme patients. Also, for more info on Sigal, see recent post by cave who laid out many of his opinions on lyme treatment. And Sigal was a consultant on the new IDSA lyme treatment guidelines. See acknowledgements at the end of the guidelines.
Assuming people are innocent until proved guilty only works if you have no information on them. When you do have information, then judgements can be made. Any activist group in our situation needs to have the facts or they are just lambs going to the slaughter.
It is easy to get information if researchers like this have published before. Just go to pubmed database (the National Library of Medicine) and plug in the name of the researcher or the subject you are interested in. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi
See what comes up. For instance, a search for the publications by Hassett, the man you are giving the benefit of the doubt is an author of the following article, abstract pasted below. Can read the full text at pubmed.

Contributions of societal and geographical environments to "chronic Lyme disease": the psychopathogenesis and aporology of a new "medically unexplained symptoms" syndrome.
* Sigal LH, * Hassett AL.
Division of Rheumatology and Connective Tissue Research, Department of Medicine, Lyme Disease Center, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08903-0019, USA.
Lyme disease is a relatively well-described infectious disease with multisystem manifestations. Because of confusion over conflicting reports, anxiety related to vulnerability to disease, and sensationalized and inaccurate lay media coverage, a new syndrome, "chronic Lyme disease," has become established. Chronic Lyme disease is the most recent in a continuing series of "medically unexplained symptoms" syndromes.
These syndromes, such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and multiple chemical sensitivity, meet the need for a societally and morally acceptable explanation for ill-defined symptoms in the absence of objective physical and laboratory findings.
We describe factors involved in the psychopathogenesis of chronic Lyme disease and focus on the confusion and insecurity these patients feel, which gives rise to an inability to adequately formulate and articulate their health concerns and to deal adequately with their medical needs, a state of disorganization termed aporia.

PSYCHOPATHOGENESIS is not a word any of us want to see associated with chronic lyme. Are you ready now to put Hassett's picture on a dart board?

I believe that where they want to go with this is in the direction that the subjects got a faulty diagnosis, that they were psychology ill, and got misdiagnosed as having Lyme. The Steere crowed has been beating that drum for 15 years.

One message to get from this post is that we need to have some input on lyme research, which we would get if the federal lyme bills were passed in their current form:
So, we need to get this out of committee, get reps to vote for it, and cosponsor it. Ask your rep to do this. Write letters, visit, call.
Betty, has Sen. Grassley signed on yet? He is also the right party to ask Rep. Barton to get this out of committee and to a vote. Republicans are calling the shots on what gets out of committee now. If you have one as a senator or representative, this is really important to pitch. But once it gets out of committee, all votes are needed, and both parties can cosponsor.
