Second Delray Beach Film Festival Debuts Tuesday

Published Monday, March 12, 2007
by By Skip Sheffield

The second annual Delray Beach Film Festival opens Tuesday at the Regal Delray Beach 18 with that timeless classic, “To Be Announced.”

Actually, festival founder Dr. Michael Poser has four choices in mind, but as of last Tuesday morning he had not decided which one.

“We have `Broken English’ and `Fay Grim,’ both starring Parker Posey,” Posner reveals. “Then there’s Weirdsville,’ which was a hit at Slamdance, and `Cashback,’ which is very funny but has some nudity.”

“Fay Grim” was finally announced as the opening film on Thursday.

Dr. Posner is a Delray Beach veterinarian who retired young when he was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. He sold his veterinary offices and 48-stall horse barn in 1995 when Delray Medical Center expanded, and he began to concentrate on his passion: seeing films and going to the film festivals where new films are seen first.

Last year’s festival was a sprawling affair, as Posner accepted almost every entry that was submitted. This year he has narrowed the selection process to around 200 out of 600 entries.

“I’ve tried to get some of the best things I saw at Palm Springs, Sundance, Newport Beach and Toronto festivals,” he explains. “Last year we showed around 400 films. This year we are trying for better quality and we plan to show a lot of the features twice to ensure they will be seen.”

Most of the films will be screened at the Regal Delray Beach 18 at Linton and US1, but some will be screened for free at Old School Square.

“We plan to show the action classic `Bullit’ Thursday on the outdoor screen,” he says. “On Friday we are brining in Bruce Brown and Wes Brown and their surf classic `Endless Summer.’ On Sunday we are screening `Robin Hood’ with Douglas Fairbanks in an original Technicolor print. We will also have vintage Technicolor cartoons.”

The Delray Beach Film Festival has younger participants than usual, both as filmmakers and filmgoers. Not coincidentally Posner has two sons in their 20s. Scott Posner is a professional surfer who has a lot of “Xtreme” sports connections. Chad Posner recently graduated from the University of Florida with an engineering degree.

Scott Posner will be offering surf lessons (waves permitting) starting at noon Wednesday.

The 7:30 p.m. Tuesday’s opening film will be followed by a party at the college-age hangout Da Da, 52 N. Swinton Avenue.

Celebrities include the husband and wife team of Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry, screening their film “The Happiest day of His Life,” which was written and directed by Ursula Burton of television’s “Office” (she also plays the bride).

Writer-comedian Bob Goldthwaite will screen his new film, “Stay, or Sleeping Dogs Lie.”

Native American actor John Beach will screen his film “Johnny Tootal.”

Having its world premiere at 3:30 p.m. Thursday is the documentary “Jewish American Princess.” Filmmakers Jackie and Ian Davis plan to attend.
