During a conversation with my husband, I realized a couple of things.

He has no clue what meds I am on and what for.

(His memory has gone south since stopping his meds [Frown] ).

I thought that I should get a Medic Alert bracelet in the event something should happen to me.

By the time someone got to our home and tried to figure out what I am on.......

Well, let's just say that would be a nearly impossible task. [dizzy]

I ordered one. Nothing fancy. Just says Lyme Disease and Pots on front.

Taking florinef on the back. (LLMD said this is important for any other medical doctor to know

In the event of an accident or ER trip).

Didn't list all my meds (not nearly enough room).

Didn't list co-infections (no one around here knows what babesia is anyways)

The bracelet is small (child sized due to my very small wrists).

Kind of makes me feel special to wear it.

I am not embaressed about my disease.

It makes me really special. [Big Grin]

Just a thought for those of you who may not have someone who knows what meds you take or why. [loco]

Hope to never need it, but glad some things won't be left to chance. [Smile]

Hugs,

Geneal

I have one that says "gluten intolerance", "taking cortef and atenolol".

"Allergic to wasp stings."

I figured those were the most important ones to know!

I have owned several different ones over the past few years. This one is my favorite as far as looks and feel.

I got this one at www.IdentifyYourself.com

American Medical ID

Now we're sisters, Geneal! [Razz]

I dont wear ANY jewlery of any kind, anywhere. Wore wedding ring for a few months till almost had finger taken off when it got caught in a store front door.

Said I love you anyway and took it off for good that was 37 years ago and havent put anything on since. I get caught on too many things!!

I think the MAIN thing to do is keep a current list where your husband CAN find it quickly. Maybe like a folder with all the docs that HAVE to survive a slow fire or tornado,him-a-caine.

Just important docs in there, like car titles, marriage license, insurance policies, kids birth certificates,,passports, YOUR adult birth certificates... NOT so much you cant grab and dash,,,not too little you cant live without contents!! 'copy' of house deed. NOT abstracts!!

Abstracts should be in a secondary box. Title insurance is replaceable.(but put in secondary box.)

Hubby, you and kids should do a small drill as to where to meet and how to get out of a house in an emergency!!Fire, duck and crawl, etc. take first folder IF possible!!(dont risk life to do THAT!!)

maybe a small fireproof, waterproof safe would be in order!!

Two story houses,,,altho the current rage,,is inherently MORE dangerous!! have GOOD alarms and bugerlar alarms then, hard wired AND battery. PLUS CO2 detectors.

If you have propane system,,,a detector for that,,,lots of propane explosions lately!! Small leak follows line inside,,whammo.

In our area some idiot stole 10 bucks worth of copper from this guys house to sell,,,(for drugs maybe??)He had the gas fill the house,,,homeowner turned on a fan to dispel propane, kaboom!!(he died)...Other homeowner JUST had safety inspection,,,their house exploded and killed the couple within days later!!

BUT main thing,,,have a safety plan in place for kids and make sure they know how to do what they need to do!!(remove a screen, duck and crawl, etc.!!)keep a step something UNDER the window for them(like a toybox)Teach them how to remove window for like cleaning AND ESCAPE!!!!(perfect time is when YOU are cleaning windows),,,have THEM help!! Practice makes perfect!!

On the drug list,,,make ONE for your little girl on pink paper, one blue for little boy, one for YOU in your fav color,,,and one for hubby is different color,,,point being so more chance of right one grabbed in a quick grab and dash!!

Even IF changes are inked in rather than typed to keep current!! Update every___like Sunday,,,would be quick that way,,,you THINK of changes every week. Then write them down before Sunday dinner.

I have yet to do something about this myself.

I am with Don. I can not handle wearing something around my wrist or neck at this time.

Having a list of meds is on my to do list along with no I am not dead if you can not find my pulse.

Heard of a website I thought would work for me but did not follow through.

You record the info on the web site and keep a card on the frig and in your wallet to direct them to the web site.

I liked it because I could keep a running record of the meds I have taken since being on this.

another thing on my to do list that has not been done yet due to not being up to doing it.

Kam,

You let me know when you think you are capable of wearing some type of jewelry,

And I will be glad to help you out.

Don, I don't trust my husband to remember where my med list is especially

Since he stopped treating Lyme over four months ago (without being in remission [Frown] )

I have to tell you this bracelet hits my watch and makes this lovely little tinkling sound.

Makes me feel feminine and even (dare I say it?) SASSY!

Don, I think you should brand one of your cows with all identifying info. [Big Grin]

Talk about a walking bulletin board!

We do fire drills. Had an alarm system on old house with all of the above including CO2 alarm.

Don't use propane to heat.

Heck, when this new house is built, I think I will be the one setting a match to the old one! [Smile]

You are right though Don, it is always good to be safe.

I guess after my son's run in with the metal pole,

I realize how much I can't control. As one or both of my children are always with me,

I thought it would be in their and my best interest to have just the most important stuff on me.

Hugs,

Geneal

[lol] Wow! You know, as well as I'm doing, sometimes my GP's nurse [ a good one ] can't find my pulse! She gets out her stethoscope when that happens!

I wonder how many other lymies have the same problem??

Lymetoo, just a thought about gluten intolerance being on the bracelet .... if it were a life-saving therapy, you would want them to treat you with something even if it had gluten. There's not an easy answer to that one.

I've never had trouble finding my pulse.

Never mind. I couldn't stand the thought of all those needle pricks or hepatitis!

Nah.....I'll just get one of those nose rings [Big Grin] .

I do at times feel like a bull in a china shop....does that count? [Smile]

I cannot wear bracelets either and there wouldn't be enough room for all the information.

I do have a magnet on my fridge that tells EMT's to look inside for a vial that contains a list of all current meds. Kinney Drugs gave them away last year, and I believe they are doing it again. You just have to remember to update it regularly.

I once had a bracelet that is this style:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Medical-Bracelet-preprinted-alert-stickers-Ladies-New_W0QQitemZ280157602399QQihZ018QQcategoryZ110374QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

It's not very attractive, is it? lol

Mine broke after a couple of years, but this one opens so you can write everyone down inside it, and that's awesome because we all change meds all the time - you can just re-write your alert message and not worry about each med not being listed on just a plain engraved band.

Cheap, too, which helps! lol

I need to order another one - my son wears one for Gluten/Casein/Autism.

Good morning All,

Miss Geneal, I am so pleased that you have brought up this most important topic!

MANY of us have unexpected encounters with emergency rooms, when it is very difficult to relay important information.

I truly believe that Medic Alert is a wonderful organization whose services could be more utilized by the Lyme Community.

I put together a post about this years ago...and wanted to add the link here for more information.

MedicAlert: http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=023470#000000

One misunderstanding thing that I keep seeing repeated is that all information needs to be ON the Alert bracelet or necklace. This is simply not true.

What IS on the piece of jewelry is an identification number and a telephone number. This offers the paramedic or other healthcare provider a toll-free number to call to get the patient's TOTAL health picture.

So, the patient may have numerous diagnoses and medications and contact numbers available all with a single phone call.

My best,
Melanie

Thanks Melanie!! I thought that service was more expensive than that. They don't require a yearly fee??

I may get this one next time. It would be good to have all the info they need!!

Sarah....Would you do us a favor by converting that lengthy URL over at www.tinyurl.com ??

If you know how to cut and paste, it's very easy to do and will help this thread go back to NORMAL width! ((hugs!))

I would be careful about putting food intolerances on a medic alert bracelet. The assumption is that you are unconscious, thus the need for the bracelet.

If you have a true food allergy where you will have a severe reaction and possibly die from a food, you would want that listed.

However, if you were going to have some discomfort, you wouldn't want to forgo lifesaving treatment because you will have GI distress.

Just food for thought.
