My brother called me at 2 AM Tuesday morning saying we should pack. He could see San Miguel Mountain from his house and the flames had made it all the way down to the street. We're just a couple miles from his place.
We were packed with important stuff (people, pets, photos) in a couple of hours, but by noon the winds shifted.
We never received a reverse 911 call (a call from the county informing households to evacuate immediately). Nor did an officer come down our street ordering us to leave. But everytime that phone rang (and still even now when it rings) I jump in anticipation of getting that "call."
We've emptied the cars but have kept everything still packed by the front door ready to grab and run if needed.
There is still a lot of brush not burned. And still roaring fires down here in some areas.
So far, one sixth of San Diego County has been evacuated.
It is common in many of the areas evacuated here for the residents to have large "pets" (horses, goats, even some zebras), and many make-shift evacuation areas (shopping malls, sports stadiums, high schools, fair grounds) that are in safe areas have even made wonderful accomodations for these animals to stay.
Some of these areas had to evacuate later due to the unexpected growth of the fire, so these livestock owners had to again rush to rescue their animals and then relocate them to another center. Which was even more difficult, as you can imagine, as many freeways were now closed due to fire.
Even one of the big hospitals had to evacuate all their patients. And also a nursing home nearby. Sadly, the move was too much for one of the seniors and they died.
Major companies (Petsmart, PetCo, Vons, etc.) are donating supplies to keep everyone in these shelters as comfortable as possible.
Some people have been able to return to their neighborhoods. Some have their homes intact. Many do not. But many have not been allowed to return yet nor do they know if they have anything to return to.
Some peoople had so little time to leave for safety that they couldn't even grab photos, etc. So firefighters have taken the time to rescue memories from a house that they know will be lost to fire. They have taken out photos, important papers, etc. and put them in a safe spot on the property. Heroes with a heart.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been down here these last couple of days and has personally visited with evaucees (sp?) at both Qualcomm Stadium (around 10,000 reported there) and also Steele Canyon High School, one of the other many, many sites that have been set up as temporary shelters.

Thanks for checking in Tabby! I am so glad you havent had to evacuate. Hang in there!
I would like to hear from other so cali folks---jeff M and terri and others whose names escape my lyme brain but who have been very supportive and helpful to me.

Our local evening news reports 2000 homes lost. 14 lives lost that they know of. Over 500,000 evacuated.
And, the largest single relief site, Qualcomm Stadium, is kicking out all fire victims Friday at noon because there's a Charger game on Sunday and they have decided not to have the game out of town.

NFA's Response to Southern California Wildfires Thursday, October 25, 2007

The National Fibromyalgia Association has received numerous calls from around the world regarding the Southern California wildfires. Thank you for your concern. While our building is out of harm's way, thousands of others have not been as fortunate. This includes many NFA members, group leaders and support group members, and family members and friends.
